Baby Granny Square Blanket - Free Crochet Pattern

I always wanted to make a baby granny square blanket, and when my best friend had another baby, it was the perfect time to make one. I used Bernat Blanket yarn which allowed me to make this blanket in under 2 hours. Wonderful.

In addition, someone on Facebook asked me to create a video on how to do the granny square. Well, I decided to combine the two and make a baby blanket using a granny square and also creating a video which is below on how to crochet a traditional granny square.

Please keep in mind there is a huge amount of granny square patterns out there, whether they are the traditional ones or the modern kinds. So, the one I used is one of the traditional granny squares.

Also, here a small little secret, while I was knitting several years ago (I was taught by my grandma when I was a teen), I decided to finally learn how to crochet. Well, if you know how to knit, crocheting is so easy to learn and is much easier then knitting actually.

But my point is, I actually learned how to crochet using a traditional granny square and if my memory is correct, it was even this granny square pattern that I used. Sweet memories 🙂

What you will need (click on the bold words for links on what I used):

Final Size: about 35 x 35 inches (depending on your tension), but size is not too important as you can stop earlier or even make it bigger, depending on your preference on how big the blanket should be for you.

Picture guide: o means magic circle or chain, + means slip stitch and the sword/ T means double crochet

Follow the universal stitch pattern as above, but increase to have a total of 16 rows, plus one outer row of 1 dc in each stitch and 1 dc in each space, plus 3 dc in each corner.

I used Sweet and Sour Varg yarn in the beginning, for 11 rows, then switched to the Vanilla yarn for 5 rows and finished the last row with Raspberry Ribbon Varg yarn.

Row 5: Ch 3, 2 dc in the space before the ch 3, ch 1, *3 dc in the next space between the 2 dc clusters from previous row, ch 1, 3 dc in the same space, ch 1, [3 dc in the next space, ch 1] 3 times, repeat from * all around, sl st to the 3rd chain of the beginning chain

**** the bolded part increases by ONE each following row!!!!

Rows 6 – 11: repeat row 5, but increase the bolded part BY ONE for each ADDITIONAL ROW. So row 6 has 4 times, row 7 has 5 times, row 6 has 6 times etc.

Row 12: change to the Vanilla yarn, continue with the pattern as the previous rows until row 16

Row 17: change color to Raspberry Ribbon varg yarn, Ch 3 (counts as a double crochet), 1 dc in the same space, 1 dc in each stitch or space all around, place 3 dc in each corner, and finish the row with 1 dc in the same space as the beginning ch3 and 1 dc, sl st to the third chain of the beginning chain.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

You are done:-)
