With Easter just around the corner it is time to prepare some decoration for it. I always liked have lots of baskets, from small to large, around my home, not just during the Easter season.
But when I came across the Turkish Star Stitch, I knew I had to create a mini Easter basket. So I did. It is easy and fast to make. And of course super cute and beautiful all at the same time.
If you have never done the Turkish Star Stitch I have a video tutorial below. If you need a picture and a video tutorial, please click HERE.
So, let me know tell and show you how to make this super cute Mini Easter Basket.
You will need:
- Bernat Satin yarn in Soft Fern
- Bernat Satin yarn in Fern
- 5.0mm hook
- yarn needle
- plastic canvas
- stitch marker
2 Turkish star stitches plus the space in between x 4 rows =1 square inch
Stitches used (US Terms):
- hdc – half double crochet
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- Turkish star stitch
Working on the bottom of the basket first, then you will working your way upwards.
Start with the Fern yarn, use a stitch marker
Round 1: Ch 13, 2 hdc in the 2nd chain from the hook, 1 hdc in the next 10 chs, 3 hdc in the last ch, (now you will work on the other side of the chain, working yourself backwards, so it is a round) 1 hdc in the next 10 chs, 1 hdc in the first ch (where you place the 2hdc in the beginning), do not sl st, use a marker and continue to the next round
Round 2: place 2 hdc each in the next 2 sts, place 1 hdc in the next 10 sts, place 2 hdc each in the next 3 sts, place 1 hdc in the next 10 sts, place 2 hdc in the next st, do not sl st, use a marker and continue to the next round
Round 3: 2 hdc, 1 hdc, 2 hdc, 1 hdc, place 1 hdc in the next 10 sts, [2 hdc, 1 hdc] 3 times, place 1 hdc in the next 10 sts, 2 hdc, 1 hdc, do not sl st, use a marker and continue to the next round
Stop here and place your bottom on a plastic canvas, draw around it to know how large your insert for the bottom needs to be and cut it out. This plastic canvas will stabilize the bottom when carrying something inside the basket.
You will now start working upwards, so in this first round of working (round 4) your way upwards, work only in the back loops.
Round 4: place *2 sc in BLO only in the next st, sk the next st, continue from * all around
Round 5: drop (do not cut) the fern yarn and pick up the soft fern yarn during the last st in round 4; now start crocheting the Turkish Star stitch
Round 6: drop (do not cut) the soft fern yarn and pick up the fern yarn during the last st in round 5, continue with the Turkish Star stitch
Round 7-25: repeat rounds 5 and 6
Round 26: do the Turkish Star Stitch with both colors at the same time one full round until you reach the edge of where the rounded corner of the basket starts, as you will now work on the strap going over the basket
Working on the strap:
Row 1: crochet 5 sc in the next 5 sts, ch 1, turn
Row 2-34: 5 sc, ch 1, turn
Feel free to make the strap shorter or longer if you like.
Slip st the strap exactly to the opposite side of the basket.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Insert the plastic canvas and start using your basket.
