Elephant Hair Tie for a Ponytail for Girls - Free Crochet Pattern

As elephants seemed to be very popular right now (or maybe always?), I wanted to make something very special for girls that love elephants and wear ponytails very often. I combined those to make an Elephant Hair tie that can be attached to a ponytail where the ponytail turns into the trunk of the Elephant. How cool is that?

In fact, from the front it just looks like the ponytail has a bow tie attached. This pattern is so fast and super easy to make and is perfect for any occasion, whether it is for a birthday, a party or just for fun on a school day.

I made this pattern, plus attaching it onto my mannequins head (I only have boys at home haha, maybe my next baby will be a girl 😀 Can you tell I want a girl in my house?) in under 30 minutes whereas the attaching part took me less than 5 minutes.

And guess what? You do not need many things to actually create this cute Elephant Hair tie. So, now let me show you what you will need, how to make it and how to attach it to a ponytail.

Sewing the ears to the face

As you can see the “circle” looks like a hexagon. Sew the ears onto the face on the sides of the hexagon that are exactly across from each other. Fasten off and sew in the ends. Now attach the eyes exactly in the middle between the ears onto the third round of the face.

Trunk

Now the trunk needs to be made according to the amount hair one has. So the best way to figure it out is to make a ponytail make a chain and wrap it around the top part of the ponytail (thickest part) and measure whether it fits about 3/4 around it.

Then you will do single crochet rows back and forth in the length that is needed or wanted for the trunk. If you don’t make the trunk as long as the actual hair is, then it looks like the elephant is spraying water out of his trunk. 😀

Here is how I made the trunk:

Row 1: ch 11, 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn

Row 2 – 28: 1 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn Fasten off and weave in the ends. Now add some strings (see picture) to one side of the long side of the trunk equal distance apart from the next string. Those strings will be used to attach the trunk to the ponytail.

Attaching the elephant hair tie to the ponytail

So, you do not need to add the trunk as the ponytail is technically the trunk, but it will look better and more realistic. Elephant Hair Tie for a Ponytail for Girls - Free Crochet Pattern

OPTIONAL: ADD THE FACE WITHOUT ADDING THE TRUNK

ADDING THE TRUNK WITH THE FACE:

1. Make a ponytail higher up on the head

2. Hold the trunk (still a rectangle at this point) to the ponytail elastic and hold it in place with a bobby pin

3. Now using one of the 2 strings of a pair, feed it thru an opening/hole on the opposite side, then using both strings and make a tie. Do the same for all the other strings.
