The Chevron Clutch Purse is the perfect little accessory to carry your phone, keys, and wallet for a date night or special occasions. It’s a free crochet pattern with a video tutorial for the stitch.
I just love the feeling of walking into a craft store such as Michaels and know exactly what I will be making when I look a certain type of yarn. That is what happened when I went to Michael’s the last time and picked up some Caron Baby Cakes.
I knew I would be going out with my husband soon on a date night and need a new clutch purse. So, I thought a chevron stitch pattern would be perfect for that and that’s how my new pattern the Chevron Clutch Purse was designed in my head.
There are different types of Chevron stitches, particular you can use this stitch with single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet or any bigger basic crochet stitches. In this pattern I used the single crochet based Chevron stitch.
If you have never made this stitch before, I created a tutorial for it that can be accessed HERE. It includes many photos, step-by-step guide and a video to make it easy to understand, even for the visual learners.
I should mention that the Chevron stitch has also another name which is the Ripple stitch. Many stitches have different names but all have the same stitch pattern.
So, let’s get started with the pattern. In case you prefer an ad-free version of this pattern which also include the chevron stitch tutorial also, please click below to buy the pdf at either my Raverly or Etsy store.
You will need:
- Caron Baby Cake (you won’t use the entire amount, so you make at least 2 pouches with 1 cake) which you can buy at Michael’s
- 5.0mm hook
- yarn needle
- 1 button
4 sc x 4 rows = 1 square inch
11 x 6.25 inches
Stitches (US terms) used:
- Chevron stitch pattern (click for Photo and Video Tutorial)
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
Make a chain of 57 (please see the tutorial link above if you want to make the clutch purse bigger or smaller)
Row 1: 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, *1 sc in the next 4 chs, sk 2 chs, 1 sc in the next 4 chs, 3 sc in the next ch, repeat from * until the you have 1 ch left where you place 2 sc, ch 1, turn
Row 2: 2 sc the first st, *1 sc in the next 4 sts, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 3 sc in the next st, repeat from * until the you have 1 st left where you place 2 sc, ch 1, turn
Row 3-50: repeat row 2, fasten off.
Next, fold the crocheted piece such that it assembled a clutch purse that is open.
Now, using a single crochet, crochet the sides together, making sure that the stitch is the same on both sides (single crochets look different from the front than from the back).
Now do the same on the other side.
Folded up without the button yet:
Lastly, attach a button in the center and add a piece of leftover yarn to the tip the points to the button so it can be used to close the clutch purse.
Finally, weave in all the ends and enjoy your new clutch purse. You can use it as a gift for your Mom, Friend or for yourself. It’s the perfect accessory for a date night.
