This pretty Chunky Hat is a beginner-friendly free crochet pattern and is made using simple basic crochet stitches and the super bulky Mighty Stitch yarn by WeCrochet. The hat can be worn slouchy or with a folded-over brim. The pom pom provides extra style.

Crocheting hats is one of my favorite things to do in the Wintertime. Regardless of the design, they provide me with a feeling of calm. It doesn’t take super long to crochet. Plus I can wear it within a couple of hours of making it. Isn’t that so cool? From touching my yarn and getting an idea, to actually wearing the hat is about 1-2 hours. WOW!

The best part about this chunky hat is that it’s beginner-friendly. It uses only half double crochet stitches and super bulky yarn. That means it’s easy on the eyes and works up super quick.

    Crocheting Hats

In fact, this hat is made from a simple rectangle. No increases or decreases at all. Just use 2 measurements from the reference table to crochet the entire hat. You don’t even need to count stitches. YES! So when I said it’s beginner-friendly, it truly is.

Crocheting hats seemed very daunting when I was a beginner crocheter. I get it. I’ve been there. But I very much believe that anyone can crochet this hat. Why? Cause I even provided a detailed video tutorial. For both the hat as well as the pom pom.

There are 3 different ways to make a hat or beanie. You either start as a rectangle and sew it together, crochet from the top down, or simply start from the bottom up. All of these versions will end up as a beanie or a hat. Add a pom of your choice to add some extra style and dimensions.

    Crocheting Hats from a Rectangle

This Chunky Hat was designed as a rectangle sewn together to make a hat with a faux fur pom pom on the top. Besides the pom pom (which can be bought if you don’t want to crochet it), the entire hat has no increases or decreases. Nice, right? Finally, after sewing the top together, I added a cute crocheted faux fur yarn pom pom for an extra wintery style.

Best Yarn for Hat Crochet Patterns

Although you can crochet hats using any yarn you wish, I have 2 favorite types I use all the time. I either use acrylic or a wool blend. Although sometimes I just use wool as it keeps you really warm and cozy during the cold winter season. You can substitute the yarn with any other yarn you wish as long as you stay within the yarn weight and the measurements provided for each hat size. This hat uses Super Bulky Mighty Stitch yarn which is an acrylic wool blended yarn.

So, let me now give you the supplies you need in order to crochet this cute hat pattern.

Written Pattern for the Chunky Hat:

First, you will crochet the first row (hat height) and then keep crocheting to make a rectangle (length = head circumference – ~4 inches), sew it together on 2 sides to make a hat, and finally you can optionally add the pom-pom.

Reference the table below for the hat height for the chain length for the head size you are making the hat for. Next, reference the table again for the head circumference (subtract about 4 inches) for the rectangle length you are working on.

Hat and Beanie Size Reference Table from premie to adult by Nicki's Homemade Crafts

    Start crocheting the hat height

Make a chain that is the length of the hat height according to the reference table above. I added 2 inches, cause I wanted the hat to have a fold-over brim (or to make it slouchy). So for an adult hat, I crocheted 23 chains.

R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 hdc in each ch, turn

R2: *1 hdc in the blo in each st, turn

Repeat R2 until you reach the length of the “head circumference”. I would suggest to SUBTRACT ~4 INCHES! Otherwise, it will be too large due to the stretchiness of the yarn and stitch. So I made my adult hat 18 inches, not 22 inches.

Now, fold over the rectangle to create a tube. Sew or crochet with slip stitches the first and last row together.

Sewing up the top part of the rectangle chunky hat

Cut your yarn to have about 1-2 feet left over.

Now use your tapestry needles and weave your yarn all around the top of the hat (pick one of the sides that are open) in and out every 2-4 rows. Pull and close the hole to create the tip of the hat.

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

I added a faux pom pom. Which is optional.

    Crochet Faux Fur Pom Pom

Optionally, you can add a pom pom. If you need a video tutorial for the faux fur pom pom, please click here.

This pattern is made in rounds. Using a 9.0mm hook and fable fur yarn

Please note that due to the yarn, it can be HARD to SEE the stitches. BUT it can be EASY to FEEL the stitches.

    Make a magic ring

R1: 8 sc into the ring, close the ring, sl st to the first st

R2: 2 sc in each st, sl st to the first st

R3: *1 sc, 2 sc in the same st, repeat from * until the end, sl st to the first st

R4: *1 sc, 1 sc dec, repeat from * until the end, sl st to the first st

R5: 1 sc dec all around, sl st to the first st

    Now stuff with polyfill.

Use a tapestry needle to close the hole. It’s easier to insert into the needle if you cut off some of the fur of the yarn tail first .

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Now sew the pom pom to the top of the hat.

Now you are finished and can use this cute Chunky Hat for the cold winter time.
