This free crochet pattern is for an origami bag. This pattern is made from a folded rectangle using the thermal stitch and Brava worsted yarn from WeCrochet and includes a video tutorial for the stitch.
Ever since my mom introduced me to crafting I loved making origami creations. In fact, my brother loved making them too and we shared a book with lots of inspirational origami projects. But since I can’t sit still and work on only one thing, I explored my crafty side more. I learned to paint, draw and knit, and eventually crochet.
So when I stumbled upon crochet origami I felt like I was sent back to my past and told my younger self that I would eventually have it all. Crochet + Origami = organisational, functional and fun crochet creations. YAY! This bag is inspired by the Japanese folding method by Azuma Bukuro.

Crocheting Bags
I always loved crocheting and sewing bags. a few years ago I made a lot of sewn bags for fun. I gave them all to my family. Cause my hubby thinks I have too many bags. LOL But seriously I have and collect a lot of bags.
Crocheting them, however, really allows me to be as creative as I want to be. Anything is possible when it comes to bags. As long as it has a handle and can store things for on-the-go transport, a bag can look any way you want.
So this origami bag is imply made from a 1:3 ratio rectangle folded together to make this beautiful bag that is slightly open in the center. The ombre effect in the color combination really make the bag stand out, as well.
Best Yarn for Bag Crochet Patterns
You can truly use any yarn you want. But I prefer using acrylic or polyester yarn for my bags as they are more durable that way. To increase the stability of the bag I decided to use the thickest crochet stitch in crochet which is called the Thermal Stitch. In combination with that, I used Brava yarn as it has really bold and beautiful colors.

Written Pattern for the Origami Bag:
First, you’ll crochet the large rectangle for the bag itself. Then crochet a smaller rectangle for the bag handle. Next, you will fold the bag together and sew it to stay that way. Finally, you’ll sew the handle to the bag tips.
Start crocheting the bag rectangle
To make the bag in ombre colors, start with wine, then change colors every 22 rows, to red, orange and finally seashell.
Chain 129
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each stitch (use the back bump of the chain), turn
R2 – 88: use the single crochet thermal stitch (watch video above to learn how to)
The rectangle should be 1:3 in size. So the length is 3 times as much as the
wide. So about 30×10 inches.
Crochet the small rectangle for the bag handle
Follow the same color combination, but crocheting 8 rows/color
Chain 67
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each stitch (use the back bump of the chain), turn
R2 – 32: use the single crochet thermal stitch
Folding the rectangle using the Japanese folding method
See the picture and then fold over the opposite side corners. Then fold one folded corner over again towards the folded edge. So it will look like the picture below. Think about that the bag is 1:3 in size and therefore the folding is equivalent to that: 3 folds.
Sewing the origami bag together
Now sew the touching edges together using the mattress stitch.
Finally, sew the handle behind the pointy edges of the bag, so it looks like the picture below. The thermal stitch sure makes the bag thick and sturdy.
Now fasten off and weave in all your ends.
