This is a free crochet pattern for the Patchwork Crochet Diamond Bag. I bet this bag will be your most beloved bag of all time. It is not only easy and beginner-friendly, but it also is made out of bulky cotton yarn and will keep its stability and durability for a long time. In fact, you can even change the size, making it bigger or smaller by simply adding or subtracting squares before you sew them all up.
“What’s in your bag?”
“Oh, let’s see. Well, I have my phone and my wallet. My car keys. A notepad and a pen – you never know when you’ll need one, a flashlight, This key chain with all of my reward cards, some extra lip gloss. Floss, Hair ties, Rubber bands, Small plastic bags – those are also incredibly useful…”
“How can you actually fit all that into your bag?”
“I made it myself with this awesome pattern I found online.”
If you need an awesome bag for all of your things too, please continue below to find the pattern.

Patchwork Crochet Bag Inspiration
I created this pattern initially for a Mystery Crochet Along which everyone seemed to love. Because it was hard for everyone to access the final pattern on one page I decided to make a new blog post to feature this amazingly simple pattern. The Mystery Crochet Along was so well loved and had such a surprise factor in the end that I will for sure have more of them in the near future. But as of right now, I hope you will enjoy this pattern that sure is dear to my heart.
I will use this Patchwork Crochet Diamond Bag for my on-the-go WIPs that I am working on at the moment. I would love to know what you will be using it for. Let me know in the comments below.

So let me now get started and tell you what you will need in order to crochet the Patchwork Diamond Bag.
How to crochet the Patchwork Crochet Bag
Materials:
- bulky yarn in 2 different colors (your choice of color and yarn company, it does not matter; you can even use 2 strands of worsted weighted yarn) -> I used DMC Natura XL 100% Cotton Yarn in the colors:
- #8 (2 skeins) and #9 (3 skeins), each skein is 50g/75m
- 6.0mm hook -> I used Furls Crochet Odyssey Hook in Purple
- scissors
- tapestry needle
Stitches used (US terms):
Click HERE to learn these basic stitches
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
Gauge:
11 rows x 10 sts = 4 square inches
Final Size:
4 x 4 inches/ square
16 (wide) x 18 (with handles, flat) inches
Patchwork Crochet Bag Instructions:
Make 12 Squares in each color (24 in the end)
Ch 11
Row 1: starting with the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each ch, ch 1, turn
Row 2 – 11: 1 sc in each st, ch 1, turn
Fasten off and weave in all the ends.
Here you can see the 12 squares in the green color. Whereas above you can see one yellow square.
Sewing the Squares Together to Create Patchwork Crochet Diamond Bag
First, lay out your squares in such a way that your main color (that you prefer) is in layers of 2 or 4 and the contrasting colors in layers of 3, just like the picture below shows. Please be aware that my rows are perpendicular to each other when looking at the squares. The rows from the yellow squares are pointing to the left and the ones from the green squares are pointing to the right.
Next, you will start sewing the squares together by going thru the outer stitches of the squares by holding 2 squares together as shown below.
As you can see below, I sewed the squares together in a zic zag. That saves yarn, time and you can actually see your project coming together as you sew it.
Now fold the sewn together square creation in half and fold over the outside squares of the row with 4 squares. Now sew together the outside edges. Do not sew the top 2 squares (2 on each side) together as you will need an opening.
Creating the handle
You will now crochet on the handle of the now created bag. Yes, I said it. It is a bag 🙂 Starting from the corner of one of the squares, attach the yellow yarn, ch 2. Now crochet the following sequence such that the single crochet is right on the tip of the corner of the square: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, ch 1, and turn. Now crochet single crochet rows until you reach the length of the strap you desire (mine is 31 rows long). Then on repeat row 1 for row 32. Sew on the end of the strap to the other square right next to it (not on the opposite side of the bag).
Now repeat the process for the strap on the opposite side of the bag.
You are now done and finished your Patchwork Diamond Bag using Bulky yarn. I hope you enjoyed this pattern. Be sure to share this pattern as a link on social media using the above or below buttons.
