This is a free tutorial to learn how to crochet Increases using Thermal Stitches which works for any thermal crochet stitch. The tutorial has both step-by-step photos and a video tutorial.
If you ever heard of the Thermal Crochet Stitch then you will likely immediately think about potholders. But this stitch has a lot more purposes than just protecting your hands from hot things. It can also be used for bags, garments, and accessories. In fact, I love using it for a very warm and cozy beanie or hat pattern.
But in order to crochet a beanie with this stitch, you will first need to know how to increase using Thermal Crochet Stitches. It is not done by just crocheting 2 stitches in the same stitch. This technique requires a 2-row increase as this stitch is made in half a row at a time.
Now, are you ready to learn how to increase any Thermal Crochet Stitches?

– Photo Tutorial
Increasing using the Thermal Crochet Technique is a bit different than normal increases.
In regular crochet, you’ll increase somewhere in a row or round, and then you’re done and can move on.
But for Thermal crochet, it’s a 2 step process. You’ll increase in one row or round and then need to finish the process in the following round.
Thermal Crochet Stitches
There are different types of Thermal Crochet Stitches. But the increasing technique which is done over 2 rows is the same for any of the stitches.
Here are a few Thermal Crochet Stitches to learn:
Row 1 – Simple Thermal Crochet Increase
So let’s start with step 1 – the easiest part!
Simple increase by adding 2 stitches in the same place. In the below picture I did that at the end of the row.
Row 2 – Thermal Crochet Increase Stitch Adjustment
So, now you will turn, chain 1, and then you’ll see that you have 2 stitches (each one with a back loop to be used) but only 1 leftover stitch from the previous row or round (that was the front loop of the stitch where you placed 2 stitches).
So you’ll now place 1 stitch by going through the first back loop and the leftover stitch from the previous row or round.
Then you’ll go through the back loop of the next stitch and the SAME leftover loop from the previous row/round you just used.
Then continue crocheting as normal as you now have adjusted the stitch count accordingly and made up the increase in the previous round.
What Projects can I use the Thermal Stitch Increase for?
Thermal Crochet is a half-a-row crochet technique that makes it the thickest crochet stitch and technique in the world. Therefore, you can use this stitch and technique for pretty much any pattern.
It requires a lot more yarn as it’s double thick. But it’s worth it. You’ll be able to keep your skin protector from the heat or cold temperatures, but also provide stability and sturdiness in bags. Plus you will not need any lining as it’s so thick nothing will fall out.
One of my favorite ways to use this stitch is for potholders, but you can also use it for beanies and so much more.
