But what if I told you there are actually lots of celebrities out there who share our same yarn obsession? That’s right. Some of our favorite Hollywood stars also enjoy quality time with their hooks and yarn – just like we do.
So let’s dive right in and read about the celebrities that crochet. Some of them may surprise you!

10 Celebrities That Crochet
I did a little digging this week and found that there are quite a few celebrities that crochet! Here is a list I have compiled of Hollywood stars who enjoy crocheting in their downtime.
Vanna White learned to crochet as a child
While she may not come as a shock to you, she’s still worth mentioning. The Wheel Of Fortune co-host is well-known for her line of yarn, Vanna’s Choice. Originally from South Carolina, she has been a spokesperson for Lion Brand Yarn for 18 years.
Vanna states, “My love of yarn began when my grandmother taught me to crochet. Crafting was so much more than a hobby to her. It was a way to share her love with everyone around her. As a mother, it was important for me to pass on my love of yarn. Now, my daughter and I love to shop for yarn and crochet together. I’m thrilled to be able to share my affordable, easy-care yarns so that everyone can share their love with the people who matter most.”
Bette Davis crocheted on set
Another celebrity that crocheted: the classy Bette Davis. She was often seen crocheting in between scenes as well as on-screen. There are several photos online that show just how often she crocheted off-screen. However, she can also be seen crocheting onscreen as well. In the movie “The Letter”, she crocheted a beautiful lace bed cover.
Debra Messing crochets
Probably most popular for her role as Grace in the 90’s sitcom, Will and Grace, Debra Messing is another celebrity that crochets! This Hollywood actress is also known for her crochet square contribution to a celebrity crochet throw.
Although she loves yarn, she is actually highly allergic to wool. In fact, she breaks out in hives just from touching it. Thankfully there are lots of other fiber options for her out there.
Katy Perry has taken up crochet
In an episode of Chatty Man, Katy Perry said, “I do a bit of crocheting now; I know, I’m the biggest nana on the block.
“I was at Liberty yesterday and they have this big crocheting aisle – everyone else that’s cool was in the designer clothes area and I was just like ‘ooh look at all these yarns, I love it”.
“So I time myself at night now, because it puts me in a relaxed state, instead of – you know, when we go to bed most times, the last thing we do is look at our phone right? …”So I thought maybe it’d be better for my subconscious and my dreaming just to like, do a bit of crocheting before I go to bed… but I also have a little niece on her way, so I’m going to knit like a little baby blanket.”
Eva Longoria crochets on set
Famous for her role in Desperate Housewives, Eva Longoria has stated that she enjoys crochet. She has also been known to crochet in her trailer between shooting scenes.
Kamala Harris is a crocheter too
Last year, when Vice President Kamala Harris went to visit a woman-owned yarn shop she revealed a fun fact: she crochets!
“I was raised by a mother who said ‘I am not going to let you sit in front of that television doing nothing.’ And so I have crocheted more afghans than I can tell you,” Harris said while visiting the store. “And our daughter is a knitter.”
Trisha Yearwood crochets to lose weight
Another celebrity who crochets is country singer, Trish Yearwood. In the past, she has tweeted “cool girls crochet”! And I am pretty sure I speak for all of us when I say that we would all agree with her.
Believe it or not, crochet is one way Trisha manages her weight! Yup. You read that right. To help with those late-night cravings, she tucks herself away and keeps her hands busy with crochet instead. That’s a great idea, Trisha! I think I’ll try that also 🙂
Aretha Franklin loved crocheting berets
Fun fact: it was actually Aretha’s neighbors who taught her how to crochet. According to Aretha, the pineapple stitch was her favorite and she loved making berets.
Aretha once stated, “To this day I enjoy crocheting various items for family and friends. I like maneuvering subtle pumpkin and pineapple stitches. As I crochet, I often think of those days in Buffalo and Mr. and Mrs. Pitman” (the ones who taught her the art of crochet).
Hilary Duff crochets a beanie
You may be surprised to learn that the American singer and actress has been learning how to crochet!
She posted a photo wearing a crochet beanie on her Instagram Stories with the caption, “@Matthew Kona your hats finished” Great job, Hilary! Your finished beanie looks fabulous and we’d love to see more crochet content from you.
Laura Ingalls Wilder filet-crocheted a doily
She may not be a young Hollywood actress or the Vice President, but Laura is known for her needlework and crocheted doilies.
In fact, you can find a reproduction of one of her filet-crocheted doilies made by Belinda Carter at the Rocky Ridge Farm in Mansfield Missouri. Pretty cool, huh?
I hope you enjoyed reading about these celebrities who crochet (or crocheted). I know I really enjoyed learning about them as I wrote this post.
