But there are different ways to “Mosaic Crochet”. Inset vs Overlay vs Tunisian Crochet. There can even be a difference between Rows vs Rounds. Most of the time, crocheters love using the envelope border for mosaic crochet projects made in rows, so they don’t need to weave in their ends.

To learn this technique the best way, it’s ideal if you crochet a small Mosaic Crochet Project first. Maybe a coaster would be ideal. You can learn the below coaster pattern in this Overlay Mosaic Crochet in Row Tutorial here.

This crochet envelope border is made in 4 stages:

1. Crochet evenly LOOSELY slip stitches along the edges and rows (make sure the same amount of sl sts are on each parallel side)

2. On the backside, crochet 1 dc in each backside loop of the slip stitches all around

3. On the front side, crochet 1 dc in each of the blo of the slip stitches all around (making sure the yarn ends are between the 2 dc rounds now)

Once you’ve done the first and back rounds of double crochets around the slip stitch round, you will see how the yarn ends of the Overlay Mosaic Crochet Rows are going to be hidden between the “sandwich” rounds.

4. Slip stitch the 2 dc rounds together by going through the back loops of the dc stitches (the touching 2 loops of each dc stitch) capturing the yarn ends in the center/tunnel of the 2 dc rounds

This border is a bit thicker but so fun and easy to crochet instead of having to weave in all your ends.

Optionally, you can also crochet linked double crochet stitches instead of regular dc stitches to eliminate the gaps completely.

Furthermore, you can add onto the border. This border doesn’t need to end at step 4.

The video tutorial above goes into a lot of detail and is a great tool to use as you work through the graph.
