Now that it is summer time, my kids want to play outside and even travel to places they have not seen before. Well, while traveling in a care my kids can’t be on an electronic device or read a book as they, like me, would get sick on the road. So we always have to bring games they can play on the trip without getting sick.
While I always try to save the environment (its in my German blood), and try not to have my kids not waste so much paper when absolutely necessary. So I thought, why don’t I make a crochet bag with the Tic Tac Toe game on it?
But as we all know so well, most kids would totally loose all the pieces even while playing the game. Which made be think of magnetic strips to add to the bag and the game pieces so they won’t get lost.
Now, they want to play all the time. And they love that it is a string bag where they just put the game pieces inside the bag when they are done playing the game. One win for mom. Yay
Luckily the pattern is super easy and fast to make, so it can be made even the day before a big trip. There are only 3 stitches you will need to know: single crochet, double crochet, and the surface crochet stitch, though the last one is easier than it sounds. It is pretty much like making chains but having a crochet piece between. I used the surface crochet also for my Flower Basket Pattern, click HERE to see it.
I used only 2 colors for this pattern, but feel free to use more or even different colors. Furthermore, I used several yarn strings to make a bunch as the tie for the bag. But if course you could also use ribbon or have a braided string. Totally up to you. I made it easy, so it works for anyone.
In fact, I used worsted weighted yarn for this pattern which gives it a nice size foe the bag and the game pieces. But if you feel like you want to make it bigger, by all means, use bulky yarn. Or if you prefer it smaller, then use lighter weighted yarn. Just be sure to use the recommended hook size for the yarn.
So, let’s get started started with what you will need before I show you the pattern instructions.

You will need (click on the item to see which ones I used):
- Caron simply soft in the colors Robbins Egg, and Black
- 5.0mm hook
- tapestry needle
- Flexible Magnetic Tape
- Hot glue gun
4 sc x 5 rows = 1 square inch
Stitches used (click on a stitch to see the tutorial):
- single crochet
- double crochet
- surface crochet (This tutorial leads you to the Flower Basket I made where I have a video on the surface crochet)
Final size of the bag:
The bag itself is 8.75 x 9 inches.
Start with the yarn color Robbins Egg
Row 1: Ch 34, 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and the rest of the chains (If you prefer or would like to use the Chainless Foundation Chain where you crochet the chain and the first row at the same time, then click HERE.), ch 1 and turn
Row 2 – 75: 1 sc in each st, ch 1, turn
At the end of the row 75, do not fasten off. Fold the long piece in half, so it looks like a square. You will now first add the surface crochet stitch for the lines for the Tic Tac Toe game, before making the piece into a bag as that is easier to do. So let the Robbins Egg yarn hanging on the side and get the Black yarn color for the lines.
Divide the square into 3 equal parts both vertically and horizontally. Then crochet the surface crochet stitch over the square as shown on the pictures below. Be sure to stay straight.
When finished with the 4 lines, fasten off the Black yarn and weave in the ends. Now you need to finish the bag itself. So pick up the Robbins Egg yarn again and crochet down on side of the bag using 1 sc per row as seen on the picture below.
Then fasten off at the bottom of the bag, weave in the end and do the same for the other side STARTING on the BOTTOM of the bag as you will then add a couple more rounds on the top of the bag.
Once the second side is finished and you made it back to the opening of the bag, you do the following:
Round 1: ch 2, 1 dc in the same st and the next 2 sts, *ch 2, sk 2 sts, 1 dc in the next 3 stitches, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st
Round 2: ch 1, 1 sc in the same st and the next 2 sts, * 2 sc in the same from the previous round, 1 sc in the next 3 sts, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Now add a string, ribbon or like me a bunch of 2 feet long strings that are tied together at the ends by weaving them thru the created spaces or holes at the opening of the bag.
Next we need to make the game pieces. 5 games picks will be for the “O” and 5 game pieces will be for the “X”. You will create 10 pieces of “O”s, but then add the “X”s on top of 5 of them using the surface crochet stitch again. Super easy and fast.
Make 10 Game pieces:
Round 1: using the Robbins Egg yarn color, make a magic ring and place 8 sc’s in the middle, pull tide, sl st to the first st
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st all around, BUT change color to Black on the last “pull thru 2 loops” of the last single crochet (that provides and even color change), sl st to the first st
Round 3: ch 1, 2 sc in the same stitch, 1 sc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st, fasten off and weave in the ends.
Now add for 5 of this game pieces the X using the surface crochet.
Adding the Flexible Magnetic Tape
You are now done and can enjoy your Tic Tac Toe game bag with magnetic tape.
