This is a free crochet pattern for creating the Soft and Stackable Bricks. This pattern contains photos and a video.
Do you have toddlers that really want to play with stackable bricks but they are just too small to be allowed to or you are scared they will swallow the pieces? Well, then this pattern is for you.
This free pattern allows you to crochet soft and stackable bricks in 3 different sizes, and because they are large, you won’t have to worry about them swallowing the pieces. They might bite on them, but that is alright because you just throw them in the washer and then they can be reused. Wonderful.
And don’t they look cute? My son even thinks they are great pillows. Haha.
The pattern for these bricks look like LEGO® bricks, but are NOT LEGO® bricks, as LEGO has a specific design that includes tubes on the inside of the brick. This pattern does not have that. But the pattern is inspired by LEGO® Bricks. According to CNN (article HERE), a judge ruled that the LEGO® bricks cannot be trademarked.

If you do not like the poly-fill and prefer the legos to be even more sturdy, I am working on another version of this pattern that makes it stand up even better. But I do prefer this soft version for babies and toddlers.

So let me now showing you how to do this awesome free crochet pattern!
You will need:
- Caron simply soft in the colors Sage (1 skein), Royal Blue (1 skein), and Red (1 skein)
- 5.0mm hook
- scissors
- tapestry needle
- Poly-fill
Gauge:
1 sc x 2 rows = 1 square inch
Stitches used:
- sc – single crochet
- sc inc – single crochet increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
- sc in the BLO – single crochet in the back loop only
Final size:
Large Brick: 10 x 5 x 4.5 inches
Medium Brick: 5 x 5 x 4.5 inches
Small Brick: 3 x 3 x 4.5 inches
Instructions:
There are 3 different sizes of bricks: large blue one with 8 studs (bumps), medium green one with 4 studs and a small red one with 1 stud.
They all have the same height and size of studs. In fact the pattern was designed such that the pattern can be expanded very easily. The red one has 10 sc in length and width, whereas the green one has 20 sc in length and width, and the blue one has 40 sc in length and 20 sc in width. So if you want bigger ones, just add 10 sc’s plus per extra stud.
Stud:
The studs are all the same for each brick. So make the amount needed depending on the brick you are making.
Make a magic ring, ch 1, and place 8 sc inside the ring and pull tide
Round 1: 1 sc inc in each st (do not sl st, as these are continues rounds)
Round 2: *1 sc inc, 1 sc, repeat from * all around
Round 3: 1 sc in BLO in each st
Round 4-6: 1 sc in each st, sl st and fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing later

Sewing it all together
All bricks are sewn together in the same way, just that they have different side panels. To show you how to sew them together, I have picture below for the blue lego brick.
First sew on all studs in equal distance from each other to one of the top panels. Before the stud is completely sewn on add the poly-fill. But do not stuff it too much as you don’t want it to be too rounded (a stud is flat on top).
Next fold the side panels in half (parallel to the crochet row lines) so that you see 2 rows on top that are now covered (as seen on the picture below). Next sew the panel folded together as seen on the picture. First sew the top part (first picture), then sew one side closed, fill with very small amounts of poly-fill so it is not bulky but still kind of flat, and then sew closed the other side. The second picture below shows the last side before poly-fill was added and before it was sewn together.
After that, you will sew the side panels to the top panel that does NOT have the studs sewn on. Sew the top to the same part where you sewed the folded side panel together (the part that is shown on the first picture ABOVE). You want the overhang to stay over hanged because that part will be sewn onto the other top panel later.
The first picture below shows the top panel on the top and one of the side panels underneath. The second picture shows the two parts being sewn together.
After sewing all the side panels on, it will look like this.
After sewing all the side panels to the top panel, you will need to sew the side panels together so they make corners.
When finished sewing together the corners, then it will look like this:
Finally, the last panel is sewn on which is the top panel with the studs already sewn on. Sew the top panel to the top part of the overhang from the top panel below. Before sewing the last side together add some poly-fill so that the top panel is kind of flat. Fasten off and weave in all the remaining ends.
The final piece(s) looks like this:
