This free crochet pattern is called the Pillowcase with Flying Hearts. It is so cozy and comfortable and you just won’t believe how easy it is to make. In fact, it is crocheted without sewing or slip stitching anything.
The only part where you will sew and slip stitch is when you create the hearts. But if you do not like the hearts you can leave them off and you for sure never sewed once or slip stitched at all.
The pillowcase it first started out in a couple rows before going into rounds and then back to rows. That allows you to create a pillowcase without sewing or slip stitching.
I used a simple 18 x 18 inch pillow to stuff the pillowcase. I got the pillow on amazing in a very affordable 4 pack (link in material list).
The hearts are made from the same yarn type as the pillowcase, but just in a different color. there are four different heart sizes that are super easy to make.

- hdc = half double crochet
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
- dtr = double treble crochet
- ch = chain
7 hdc x 7 rounds = 4 square inches
18 x 18 inches
I will add pictures showing different yarn and color to make it easier to see how to do the first several steps. That same yarn was used to explain those steps in the video tutorial.
Start with the pristine yarn color
You will work in continues rounds, so be sure to use a stitch marker! You will not ever slip stitch!
Row 1: Chain 31, 1 hdc in each st starting from the 2nd chain from the hook, place all sts in the back bump of the chain to make the second row easier (30 sts)
Row 2: You will now work on the opposite side of the chain where the “V’s” are of the initial chain you created. 1 hdc in each st across (30 sts). Now use a stitch marker after the last st as you will now crochet into rounds.
Round 1 – 28: 1 hdc in each st all around (60 sts)
You will now work in rows again.
Row 1: Ch 1, 1 hdc in st for the next 30 sts, ch 1, turn (30 sts)
If you want to add buttons to close the pillow case, stop after row 6 (should be 3 skeins), add buttons as well as some loops so you can use the buttons. If you prefer tucking the overhang to close the end/ button of the pillow case, then follow the instructions below. You will then need no buttons at all.
Row 2 – 15: 1 hdc in each st, ch 1, turn (30 sts)
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Crocheting the flying hearts
Now, use the berry burst yarn color.
You will crochet 4 different sizes of hearts that then will be sewn on to the pillow case (besides weaving in the ends, this is the only sewing part).
Tiny Heart (make 1)
Chain 2, 3 hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook, all the following go into the same chain: 3 sc, ch 1, 1 hdc, ch 1, 3 sc, 3 hdc, ch 1, sl st
Small Heart (make 6)
Chain 3, 3 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, all the following go into the same chain: 3 hdc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 3 hdc, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st
Medium Heart (make 4)
Chain 4, 3 tr in the 4th ch from the hook, all the following go into the same chain: 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr, ch 3, sl st
Large Heart (make 1)
Chain 5, 3 dtr in the 5th ch from the hook, all the following go into the same chain: 3 tr, ch 1, 1 dtr, ch 1, 3 tr, 3 dtr, ch 4, sl st
Sewing the hearts to the pillowcase
Start with laying out the hearts how you would like them to be placed. Be sure that the pillowcase opening is on the bottom.
I have the large heart on the top right corner and the tiny heart on the button left corner. The other 4 medium and 6 small sized hearts are mixed up between the tiny and large heart.
To make the look like they are flying, I imagined a straight line in the middle of the heart (when you fold a heart in half you have a line). That is the line I used to sew the hearts to the pillowcase.
Be sure to weave in all the ends. You are now done with the pillow case with the flying hearts without using sewing or slip stitching for the pillow case itself.
Make sure you check out the video tutorial below for a detailed explanation to how to start and make the pillowcase without sewing and slip stitching.
