This hexagon granny square easy crochet bag pattern will show you how to make cute purse using just two hexagons and a granny square. It’s a fun DIY project for any skill level.

Crochet bags are the perfect stylish accessory for the crochet enthusiast who is also a fashionista. You can make them in all different styles, colors, and sizes to complement every outfit. This specific pattern uses just three pieces – two hexagons and one solid classic granny square – to form a beautiful and useful bag with ample space for all of your belongings.

This hexagon and square tote bag is not only gorgeous but also practical. It’s made from linked double crochet, a variation of the classic double crochet stitch that eliminates gaps and creates a dense, sturdy fabric that holds up well to everyday use. To help, I’ve provided a video tutorial that covers all the essentials of this stitch. So even beginners should be able to master it!

Customizing Your Hexagon Crochet Tote Bag

There are so many ways to customize this fun project and make it your own. Depending on your choice of yarn and colors, you can significantly influence the overall aesthetic of this versatile design to make it appropriate for various activities. Make this crochet hexagon tote in a fun, bright color to take to the beach or in classic black for date night. You could also use it on a shopping spree in place of plastic bags.

Although my sample calls for worsted yarn and a 5 mm hook, you could experiment with a different yarn weight to change the size of the bag. For example, you could try bulky yarn to make a larger bag. Or size down to make a smaller bag.

For my bag, I used an embroidered iron-on patch as a quick way to add a beautiful rose design without much extra work. Just a few dots of hot glue and you’re good to go! There is a huge variety of embroidered patch designs. So if roses are not your thing, you could add a different type of flower, a smiley face, or any other design you wish.

And of course, you may like to embellish it in a different way. You could add any number of crochet appliques. Or if you’re going for a sleek and simple look, you don’t have to add any decoration at all.

You’ll finish it off by adding a simple single crochet handle. However, if you want to make your bag extra luxurious, you could also attach a pre-made bag handle. Some possible bag handles you can buy are bamboo, metal, or beaded handles. Really, you are only limited by your creativity!

Hexagon Granny Square Bag Assembly

Sew the hexagons and granny square together like the picture below.

Bag strap

R1: Ch 5, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc, per ch, turn

R2: 1 sc per st, turn

Repeat R2 until the strap is 18 inches long. Now sew the strap to the top of the bag, then attach a piece of yarn on one side of the strap and weave it through the strap and attach it to the other side (prevents strap from over stretching).

Finishing Touches

Optionally, hot glue the rose iron-on to the bag.

Optionally, you can also harden the bag (soak into 50:50 Elmer’s glue Water solution and let it dry) OR add a lining. I decided not to do that.
