Saloniki Stitch Tunisian Crochet Slippers

So, what the heck is the Saloniki stitch anyway? If you’re not familiar with this Tunisian crochet stitch, no worries. I made a whole blog post about it, complete with a video tutorial.

I promise that it’s much easier than it looks (and I know that it looks pretty darn striking!) because it’s really just a combination of Tunisian simple stitches and Tunisian full stitches.

So, let me now give you the supplies you need in order to crochet this fun project.

How to Make Tunisian Crochet Slippers

Materials you will need

Gauge

4 sts x 3 rows = 1 square inch

Sizes

Toddler through Men size 14 

Stitches used in the pattern

Learn all the basic crochet stitches HERE (US crochet terms and abbreviations)

  • TSS = Tunisian Simple Stitch
  • TFS = Tunisian Full Stitch
  • sl st = slip stitches
  • ch = chain

Before starting your Tunisian crochet slippers, I recommend watching the stitch tutorial video below.


Tunisian Crochet Slippers – Written Instructions

Note: The slippers are made from rectangles. Use the table to determine the beginning chain count and height of the rectangle for the size you want to make. Then sew it together according to the instructions and pictures.

R1 F: 1 TSS per st (forward pass)

R1 R: work stitches off the hook 

R2 F: 1 TSS in the first stitch, 1 TFS in the next 2 spaces (between the stitches)

R2 R: Now let’s crochet the return pass for our Tunisian crochet slippers (***different than normal)

  1. Yarn over and pull through 1
  2. Yarn over pull through 3
  3. Yarn over pull through 2
  4. Repeat steps a and b until you have 2 loops left, yarn over and pull through 2 loops

Repeat R2 until you have the length needed according to the reference table.

Cut a longer yarn end (about 2 feet). Weave yarn through the last row in and out and then connect to the 1st stitch of the row,

pull and close the hole, make a knot,

Now sew the edges about half way of the length of the rectangle using the mattress or whip stitch. Make a knot, weave your yarn to the corner of the 1st row made, and make another knot. Weave in ends.

Now, fold the first row made in half and sew those edges together using the mattress or whip stitch.
