Summary of Episode 12 with Kali
We started chatting about the beginnings of The Friendly Red Fox and how Kali taught herself to crochet from YouTube tutorials. It all started with the desire to make a hat for her son.
Kali started by selling her finished projects at craft fairs and Etsy shop. However, it got a little overwhelming with small kids to look after, so she started by designing and writing patterns.
I laughed when Kali said she got tired of making hats on repeat, so she started making toys and remembers to this day which animal toy was her first.
It was a learning curve for Kali to perfect her toys to the cute versions she makes today. She practiced a lot on how to make them look adorable, sew the parts together, and how to stuff them.
Kali identifies herself mainly as a crochet amigurumi designer, however, she enjoys the occasional mindless blanket design too.
I was amazed when Kali said she designed an animal for each letter of the alphabet, which was a huge project but it kept her focused and inspired. Her sons helped her with choosing the animals, although some of them proved to be a little tricky.
Kali has three sons that keep her super busy which is why she only designs part-time at the moment.
I had to agree with Kali’s favorite yarn choice, it is a good one to use with so many different colors.
Kali shares a few questions she gets from people when it comes to amigurumi like sewing or materials choices. She also has a few tricks up her sleeve that she would like to try.
One of the techniques Kali would like to try is tapestry crochet. She has tried Tunisian crochet before and is excited to explore it more.
Kali shared what her most favorite part of designing is and also the not-so-favorite part.
