Summary of Episode 24 with Jen
Jen started crocheting when she was nine or ten years old after her mum showed her the basics. For a very long time, she used to make chains. Then she moved onto scarves and granny square blankets.
After her husband showed her a crocheted toy, Jen was hooked on creating them. After making a Mario toy for her gamer husband, she had a lot of requests from his friends and later from her kids.
She used to make it on the side, but in 2008 she started her own blog where she started to share her own designs and patterns.
Inspired by everything around her, she loves exploring different ways to create her pieces. Jen normally starts by sketching out her designs and plans all the details that she would like to add.
Jen really enjoys the photography aspect of her crochet business. She has a table set up by a large window where she takes her incredible pictures. She also gets her husband involved who normally has to make an extra shelf or two.
A little like me, Jen is a perfectionist so she publishes one pattern a month. This is due to the design process being very intensive and requiring a lot of progress photos.
She also makes two of each design, just to check her work and give people the option of making their item rustic or in full colors.
Jen gets inspired by her kids or their friends who always ask for things they want her to make for them. She also gets a lot of requests from her audience.
I was happy when Jen shared her secret tips and tricks on getting your amigurumi looking so cute and perfect. Magic rings, yarn over or under, Jen gave us her tips.
I asked Jen about stuffing her toys and making the faces look cute and were amazed when she shared her tips.
I laughed when Jen shared some funny stories involving yarn and her kids and her dog when he was a puppy.
One of Jen’s daughters is getting into crocheting and she even teaches her friends the basics.
