Free Striped Mosaic Crochet Square Pattern – MooglyCAL Afghan Block 24

This free mosaic crochet square pattern uses simple stitches to create an eye-catching striped design. Make it in holiday colors for Christmas or coordinate it with other squares. This pattern is part of the Moogly CAL 2023.
Do you ever get bored making a whole afghan from one stitch? Sometimes it’s nice to work on a easy project while watching TV or chatting with friends. But other times, you want to try something new. That’s why sampler blankets are so much fun. Each of the individual squares is a different pattern so they are a great way to try out different techniques.
The special thing about this particular sampler afghan is that it’s made up of a variety of patterns, each one designed by a different talented crochet designer. Even better, it’s a crochet along (or CAL). Tamara hosts the Moogly CALs each year, where hundreds of crocheters work on the same project at the same time. It’s a fun way to connect with other crocheters and share your progress as you complete a bigger project. If you want to learn more about Tamara, you can watch the episode of Nicki’s Crochet Podcast where I interviewed her.

My striped mosaic crochet square is the 24th one for 2023. Here in this post, you will find the free pattern as well as a companion video tutorial for you to help you complete the pattern. This block uses the overlay mosaic crochet technique. This is a colorwork technique that creates what looks like intricate designs on the right side of the crochet fabric. But actually, overlay crochet is doable for any skill level, even beginners, as it uses just basic single and double crochet stitches.

Moogly CAL 2023
I’m so honored that Tamara has once again asked and featured me in her 2023 Moogly CAL. Each year, she invites 24 designers to contribute 24 squares to an afghan, which she crochets throughout the year. All of these crochet creations come together and the end result is a beautiful and unique blanket.
You can find more information about the Moogly CAL here, on the designer’s blog post. There, Moogly will share the other free patterns in this CAL, as well as information on yarn colors and how to assemble your squares.
