Free Reversible Crochet Gnome Pattern – Easy and Adorable

This adorable and fun crochet gnome features reversible mosaic crochet, linked crochet, and knit-like crochet as well as a fun-to-make yarn beard. This free crochet pattern is made with worsted-weight yarn.

It’s time for the Christmas and Holiday Season. And what better way to get started than with cute adorable crochet gnome patterns like this one? But this pattern is not one of your regular crochet gnome amigurumi patterns. It’s reversible and it has a storage basket as the body.

However, if you don’t need a hidden compartment to hide your candy or crochet hooks during the holiday season, you can totally turn this gnome into a traditional oversized crochet gnome as an amigurumi stuffed toy.

Every year, the Gnome Trend spikes during the Christmas and Holiday Season and this year is no different. These mythological creatures are very popular as they are quick to make and can be made very cute without having to worry about eyes and mouth as those are hidden behind the big hat and long beard with a cute nose in the center. These cute little guys simply need a big body, a fairly large hat with a cute nose, and a long fluffy beard to turn the Christmas time into a magical time.

Free Crochet Gnome Pattern

Little Gnomes usually are made with mostly single crochet stitches or other basic crochet stitches. Well, this pattern features a few different crochet stitch techniques such as reversible overlay mosaic crochet to make the body and storage basket reversible, as well as linked crochet and knit-like crochet.

This Santa gnome, mostly made in red and white yarn (and a little bit of beige yarn for the nose) also has a small Santa sack on the side which I will use to store my stitch markers. But I can see this pattern will also be great in different colors such as green and white to make an elf gnome for the Christmas time.

Regardless of which colors you pick to make your gnome crochet pattern, it will make a wonderful gift for the Christmas season. By the way, you can find more fun Christmas Gnomes in this free crochet pattern collection, which may feature a crochet gnome towel topper, Crochet Heart Gnome, or other crochet Christmas Gnomes.

Although I made this pattern in only one size, you can totally make this pattern in different sizes. You can use bigger or smaller yarn to change the size or reduce or add to the pattern, but no guarantees that will look great.

And if you are a visual learner, I also added a few video tutorials to learn the stitches needed to help you along with the written free pattern as well. This pattern used to be a mystery crochet along and is broken up like that accordingly.

It’s time to get creative, so let’s get started!

Written Pattern Notes

You’ll crochet the body first, then the hat, and finish with the arms, beard, nose, and Santa sack.

Mosaic Crochet Gnome Body – Storage Basket

Let’s get started with the first stitch technique for this pattern. You’ll learn how to crochet Overlay Mosaic Crochet. But you also learn how to make it reversible if you choose to use that option – which I recommend you do.

Written Pattern and Graph

Start with Red

R1: Magic Ring, add 6 sc, close the ring, use a stitch marker for continuous rounds (6)

R2: 2 sc per st (12)

R3: *1 sc, then 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * all around (18)

Now follow the mosaic crochet graph or written pattern. Choose whether you want to make it reversible overlay mosaic crochet (watch Part 1’s video for the instructions) or regular overlay mosaic crochet.

ALL sc stitches are made in BLO

ALL mdc stitches are made 2 rows down in the FLO of the same color

FOR reversible overlay crochet, ALL sc stitches ABOVE an mdc stitch are made with a sc-dc combo (anchor stitch in the back – watch the video for a detailed explanation).

Written instructions:

Repeat each Round Repeat 7 times (42 sts per round)

All odd rounds are red. All even rounds are white.

R1: (sc) x 6
