This is a summary of 5 easy ways on how to crochet a stunning shawl to complement any outfit.
I stretch my sun kissed legs out and feel the warm sand between my toes. The warm sun rays are kissing my cheeks and the gentle breeze is playing with my sun bleached long hair. My face is covered in little cheeky freckles the sun teases out ever year.
I watch him swim the last few meters towards me before he stands up. The gentle ocean waves hug his ankles before he flicks off extra water off of his hair. He leans over and gives me a gentle peck on the cheek and a few drops land on my hot shoulders.
Different crochet shawl shapes came to rescue
“Ouch, looks like you could do with a break from the sun” he says.
I haven’t even noticed that my shoulders were now a little red. He pulls my triangle shawl from the bag and covers my shoulders.
“Shall we go and get a drink and cool down?” he asks.
“Yes, let’s do that!” I jumped to my feet brushing the sand off my legs.
I take my rectangle crochet wrap and tie it in a knot on the side of my hip. I’m glad I had them both as their different shapes come in handy.

5 Easy Ways to Crochet a Shawl
There certainly are plenty more ways to crochet a shawl but these are my 5 foolproof ways. These are great shapes and techniques to use if you are just starting out in crocheting slightly larger projects.
These crochet patterns are great because they are easily adjustable pattern. Which means you can make a shawl custom to the size you want. The finished size can also be changed by using a different weight of yarns and larger or smaller hook.
1. Rectangle Shape Crochet Shawl
This is a great first shawl pattern to start with. Rectangular crochet shawls are easy to make and very beginner-friendly. They require minimal shaping as they are a larger and wider version of a basic scarf. There are no tricky increases or decreases to follow.
I love my STUNNING CROCHET POCKET SHAWL WITH DETACHABLE HOODIE – EASY FREE PATTERN. It is an easy wrap to make with the addition of pockets and a detachable hoodie. You can also keep things simple and just make the basic rectangular shawl without the extras.
2. Triangle Crochet Shawl
This is by far the most popular shape amongst crocheters. Triangular shawls are very versatile in the different ways you can wear them. Take a look at 7 Different Ways to Wear a Triangle Shawl HERE.
There are also different techniques you can use. You can either start at the bottom point of the triangle working towards the wider edge increasing on both sides. The other basic way is to start at the center of what will become the widest edge and work around the two sides of the triangle.
I used a combination of granny crochet stitches and crossover stitches to create SIMPLE CROCHET ROYAL GRANNY SHAWL – FREE PATTERN. It is a beautiful and most elegant accessory that would be perfect for many occasions.
3. Chevron or Ripple Crochet Shawl
This beautiful large shawl has a slightly different construction. It results in large striking crochet shawl that you will absolutely love. EASY CROCHET TULIP CHEVRON SHAWL – FREE PATTERN WITH VIDEO TUTORIAL uses alternating rows of solid and filet crochet rows that create ripples or chevrons.
This creates an elegant and stylish shawl for every day or for a special occasion like date night or wedding. I used bamboo yarn that makes this crochet shawl super soft with a lovely drape. The finished size is large enough to cover your back, arms and enough to pin it together at the front.
4. Asymmetric Shaped Crochet Shawl
There are so many shapes and patterns that would fall into this category. I used this technique for SUNSET BOOMERANG SCARF – FREE CROCHET PATTERN. The finished shape is very similar to a triangle but the overall shape actually reminds me of a boomerang.
To achieve this asymmetric crochet shawl you will increase on one side and decrease on the other side at the same time on each row. This will result in the shawl slanting over diagonally. The Sunset Boomerang Scarf uses basic double crochet stitches so it’s really easy to make and works up rather quickly.
5. Circular Crochet Shawl
This is slightly unusual shape for a crochet shawl. Some people actually create holes in the circles and wear these shawls as vests or cover ups.
You can actually make it without the armholes and have the entire circle to hang over your shoulders. You can make the last few rounds with added frills or ruffles, then fold it over at 2/3 point and drape it over your shoulders. PJ Crafts’ Shawl shows you beautifully how to wear it elegantly. You can even use a button or a shawl pin to hold it in place. Check out the free crochet pattern by clicking this link.
