Right now I am in the mood to make lots and lots of crochet baskets. Perfect timing, as it is springtime, spring cleaning and re-organizing the house for me is to make the house pretty with decorations, in my case handmade decorations.
This woven cable basket is fast and easy to make. First you make the cable pattern which has a 4-row repeat, therefore super easy to do. I even have a video below on how to do the woven cable stitch.
And secondly you make the circle, for the bottom which you then single crochet together to the cable pattern.
And it looks so pretty and elegant, don’t you think?

You will need:
- 5.0mm hook
- Caron Simply soft yarn in the color bone
- tapestry needle
- scissors
Gauge:
4 FPtr in a row x 1 FPtr in height = 1 square inch
Instructions:
WOVEN CABLE PATTERN
Row 1: 20 Foundation single crochets OR ch 21, 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), [sk next 3 sets, FPtr in the next 3 sets; working in the FRONT of the sets you just made, FPtr in the skipped sts] 3 times, dc in the last st, turn
Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as a hdc), BPdc in the next 18 sts, 1 hdc in the ch-3 space, turn
Row 4: Ch 2 (counts as a dc), FPdc in the next 3 sets, [sk the next 3 sets, FPtr in the next 3 sets; working BEHIND the sts you just made, FPtr in the 3 skipped sts] 2 times, FPdc in the next 3 sts, dc in the ch-2 space, turn
Row 5: Repeat row 3
Repeat rows 2-5, 11 more times for a total of 12 4-row repeats.
Fold the woven cable pattern in half, and with the right sides facing each other, sl st the ends together. DO NOT cut the yarn.
Ch 1, sc evenly (sometimes 2 – 3 sc’s per space) around the edge of the woven cable pattern, sl st to first sc of the edge, fasten off.
BOTTOM OF THE BASKET
Use a stitch marker, as these are continuous rounds with no slip stitches!
Round 1: Make a magic circle and crochet 6 sc into the circle, pull tight
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch all around
Round 3: *2 sc, 1 sc, repeat from * all around
Round 4: *2 sc, [1 sc] 2 times, repeat from * all around
Round 5: *2 sc, [1 sc] 3 times, repeat from * all around
Round 6: *2 sc, [1 sc] 4 times, repeat from * all around
Round 7: *2 sc, [1 sc] 5 times, repeat from * all around
Round 8: *2 sc, [1 sc] 6 times, repeat from * all around
Round 9: *2 sc, [1 sc] 7 times, repeat from * all around
Round 10: *2 sc, [1 sc] 8 times, repeat from * all around
Round 11: *2 sc, [1 sc] 9 times, repeat from * all around
Round 12: *2 sc, [1 sc] 10 times, repeat from * all around
Round 13: *2 sc, [1 sc] 11 times, repeat from * all around
Round 14: *2 sc, [1 sc] 12 times, repeat from * all around
Round 15: *2 sc, [1 sc] 13 times, repeat from * all around
Round 16: *2 sc, [1 sc] 14 times, repeat from * all around
Round 17: *2 sc, [1 sc] 15 times, repeat from * all around
Now, you need to attach the circle bottom to the woven cable pattern by holding the pretty side of the bottom as such that it is on the inside the basket, then do 1 sc per sc of the circle to the woven cable basket (like you did with the edge just this time to the bottom).
Fasten off and weave in the ends. You are done!
OPTIONAL:
Of course you can make the basket taller and and bigger in the diameter. All you have to do is increase the amount of chains or foundation single crochets by 6 as many times as you need/want to to reach the height of the basket you would like to have.
Furthermore you increase the diameter, by repeating the 4 rows more than 12 times in total.
Correspondingly, you can increase the circle for the bottom by continuing with the pattern as written above.
Just be sure to check that the circle is neither too large or too small when increasing the amount of repeats of the rows for the woven cable pattern.

Just wondering for durability purposes if this could somehow be adapted to be crocheted as one piece? What I was thinking was using two strands of yarn, crocheting the bottom then working up the sides. Just not sure how to get some pattern for sides. As you can tell I’m not a designer.

Yes, you could do that. But it would not work for this cable pattern if you want it to run side ways (Like me). But I you want it to go upwards then yes, you can do it in one whole piece without sewing. Hope tis helps.
