This free crochet pattern is for a pocket shawl with a detachable hoodie. This pattern is made using the suzette stitch and Feels Like Butta yarn from Lion Brand and includes a video tutorial for the stitch.
As soon as I saw the first picture of a pocket shawl trending on Facebook in 2020, I knew I wanted to make one. I’m usually not one to jump on a bandwagon to create a version of trending pattern style. But I loved the idea so much, that I knew I wanted to design one as well. Although I’m months behind the trend, I believe a beautiful pocket shawl can always be used and make you feel pretty.
In fact, one of the things I thought was missing from the original trending pattern was a hoodie. Specifically, a detachable hoodie that you can attach or remove depending on your mood, style, or weather.
Crocheting Pocket Shawls
Pocket shawls are simply very long rectangles and much wider than a normal scarf. You can make the rectangle extra long and fold over the ends to create pockets. Or you can sew them on as small squares as I did.
Either way, the pocket shawl comes to life because of the shawl hanging over your shoulders to keep you warm while your hands are in the pockets to keep the shawl in place and also keep your hands warm. The hoodie, on the other end, is a special touch of style that also keeps you warm in case it gets colder than you expected.
Pocket Shawls are super popular right now. So I created a tutorial explaining 5 secret tips to crochet a pocket shawl for more details.
Best Yarn for Pocket Shawl Crochet Patterns
Well, that all depends on what you prefer. I like using really soft and sturdy yarn that can keep me warm but also can last a long time and won’t stretch too much. So I thought the Lion Brand yarn “Feels Like Butta” was the perfect yarn for this beautiful pocket shawl. If you prefer subbing the yarn you can easily use any wool, acrylic, and even cotton yarn for this project. Just make sure it’s worsted weighted yarn.

Written Pattern for the Pocket Shawl with a Detachable Hoodie:
First, you’ll crochet the large rectangle for the pocket shawl. Then crochet the pockets and sew them on. Finally, you will crochet a small rectangle and sew it together on one side to make a hoodie. Add some yarn which allows you to attach the hoodie temporarily to the pocket shawl.
Start crocheting the shawl rectangle
Chain 293
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, *[1 sc, 1 dc] in the same ch, sk 1 st, repeat from * until the end, turn
R2: *[1 sc, 1 dc] in the same st (it’s always the dc from the previous round), sk 1 st, repeat from * until the end, turn
R3 – 60: repeat R2
Crochet the pockets
Make 2 pockets
Chain 29
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, *[1 sc, 1 dc] in the same ch, sk 1 st, repeat from * until the end, turn
R2: *[1 sc, 1 dc] in the same st (it’s always the dc from the previous round), sk 1 st, repeat from * until the end, turn
R3 – 24: repeat R2
Now place each small square in the center of each side of the large rectangle, about 2 inches away from the end (or further away, depending on how long the arms are of the person using this shawl). Now sew the small squares to the large rectangle on 3 sides to create an opening towards the center of the large rectangle.
Crochet the hoodie
Chain 71 (if you like to cover the face more, add about 6-10 chains)
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, *[1 sc, 1 dc] in the same ch, sk 1 st, repeat from * until the end, turn
R2: *[1 sc, 1 dc] in the same st (it’s always the dc from the previous round), sk 1 st, repeat from * until the end, turn
R3 – 46: repeat R2
Now fold the long side inwards on one side and sew the touching edge together. I used the mattress stitch but you can use the whip stitch, slip stitch or any other stitch.
Now add 7 about 12 inches long pieces of yarn folded in half, String pieces to the opposite side of the hoodie (see picture below). Use your yarn to pull them through and pull the yarn through the loop.
Attaching the Hoodie to the Pocket Shawl
In order to attach the hoodie to the pocket shawl, you can use my method which is temporary by pulling one of the 2 strings of one set through with a hook and making a bow as you would when tying your shoes.
Make sure the hoodie is exactly in the center of the pocket shawl. To make sure that is the case, simply fold the hoodie as well as the shawl in half and line them up where the fold is and then start tying the string together
Or you sew the hoodie to the pocket shawl permanently, using the mattress stitch for example.
Now fasten off and weave in all your ends.
I hope you love this pocket shawl with a detachable hoodie pattern as much as I do.
