    Elf Hat with Pom-pom - Free Crochet Pattern by Nicki's Homemade Crafts #crochet #elf #christmas #hat #beginner #easy

I created this Elf hat with Pom-pom a couple of days ago after I made this Santa hat. I got many great reviews on my social media pages such as Facebook and Instagram for the Santa hat, so I thought it would be great to also make a cute Elf hat.

I was very excited to write this one down and publish it so anyone can make this cute and adorable Elf hat. Well, here it is.

I love that this pattern can be adjusted in order to create many different hat sizes by using the table included in the pattern. Video tutorials are on the bottom of this pattern.

This hat pattern is for a Teen or Adult (it is stretchy which is why it says teen or adult). Please see the information at the end of the pattern on how to adjust the pattern for different sizes.

You can get the crochet pattern for the Elf Hat with Pom-Pom on Ravelry, Etsy, LoveCrafts, or my new membership The Crochet Club. The Crochet Club has so much more to offer than just PDF patterns! You get tutorials, references and the complete VIP treatment as well.

If you pay just twice the amount as this pattern costs and you have a month’s worth of The Crochet Club Membership with a lot more patterns! It’s well worth it.

    What you will need:

    • 6mm hook
    • Worsted weighted yarn, I used Loops & Thread’s Impeccable in green and red
    • Tapestry needle
    • Scissors
    • Pom-pom maker (optional, unless you make it manually with your hand or a paper board)

Stitches that are used in this pattern:

    • Magic ring
    • Hdc
    • Dc
    • Bpdc (back post double crochet); Tutorial can be found here
    • Fpdc (front post double crochet); Tutorial can be found here

    Gauge:

4 Hdc in 1 inch x 5 rows of hdc in 2 inches

    Instructions:

    NOTE:

In order to adjust the hat to a different size, be sure to measure the hats diameter after every increasing row/round and compare your measurement to the table at the end of this pattern as that will tell you when to stop increasing for a certain hat size. (Increases are displayed by crocheting 2hdc in the same stitch.)

For example, after row 30, the diameter is about 4.5inches which would make the hat (if stopping after row 30) for a baby 3-6 months old. To make the hat smaller, please stop increasing before row 25.

If you want to make the hat larger, but not as large as a teenager/adult, row 31 needs to be adjusted. For example, instead of the pattern “1 hdc, 2 hdc…”, make it “1 hdc, 1hdc, 2 hdc…” or ”(1 hdc)x3, 2 hdc…”, etc.

Always make sure to measure the diameter after every increasing row to determine whether you need to make adjustments before continuing on with the pattern. The more increases within a row the larger the diameter of that hat will be, whereas the fewer increases are placed within a row the less the diameter will increase. Therefore, row 31 is crucial for adjustments for hats sizes between 3-6month olds and adult sizes.

    Pattern Instructions:

Row 1: Start with green yarn and make a magic ring and chain 10 hdc into the ring and pull tight, sl st to the first hdc (10st)

Row 2-6: Ch1, 1 hdc in each st all around, sl st to first hdc (10st)

Row 7: Ch1, *1 hdc, 2 hdc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to first 1 hdc (15st)

Row 8-12: Ch1, 1 hdc in each st all around, sl st to first hdc (15st)

Row 13: Ch1, *1 hdc, 2 hdc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to first 1 hdc (22st)

Row 14-18: Ch1, 1 hdc in each st all around, sl st to first hdc (22st)

Row 19: Ch1, *1 hdc, 2 hdc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to first 1 hdc (33st)

Row 20-24: Ch1, 1 hdc in each st all around, sl st to first hdc (33st)

Row 25: Ch1, *1 hdc, 2 hdc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to first 1 hdc (49st)

Row 26-30: Ch1, 1 hdc in each st all around, sl st to first hdc (49st)

Row 31: Ch1, *1 hdc, 2 hdc in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to first 1 hdc (73st)

Row 32-36: Ch1, 1 hdc in each st all around, sl st to first hdc (73st)

    Change to red yarn

Row 37: Ch2, 1 dc in each stitch all around, sl st to first dc (73st)

NOTE: The amount of stitches within this row will depend on the size hat you are making. I have 73st in this row for a hat that would fit a teenager/adult.

Row 38: Ch2, *fpdc, bpdc, repeat from * all around, sl st to first dc (73st)

Tutorial for fpdc and bpdc can be found here

Row 39-42: Ch 2, *fpdc, bpdc, repeat from * all around, sl st to first dc (73st); making sure the fpdc is above a fpdc from the previous round, same for the bpdc; see the picture below on how that would look like at the end.

Row 43: Ch1, 1sc in each stitch all around, sl st to first sc, fasten off and weave in the ends

Add a red pom-pom in the size you desire.

    Finished 🙂

If you want to change the size of the hat to make it fit different size heads, please refer to the table below.

*** The hat height is the amount measured from the rim that would fit a certain head size. The elf hat has an elongated part that cannot be part of the “hat height” as the head would not fit in the thin part of the hat where the pom-pom is placed.

Therefore, the hat height should rather be determined by trying it out on the head that would fit the size you are making. For example, the hat that I made this pattern for (teen-adult) actually measures about 16 inches (without the pom-pom) which is about 4-5 inches longer than the measurement listed in the table. I hope that helps and explains how to determine how long your hat needs to be.
