This is a free elegant mug cozy with a spoon holder crochet pattern made with simple basic crochet stitches. This is a great beginner pattern with a video tutorial.
It’s the time of the year when many people drink more hot beverages like coffee, tea, and hot choco. So it’s best to make sure they don’t burn or hurt their hands when enjoying their drink. But if you are anything like me, you also have a spoon with your drink. Well, this mug cozy includes a spoon holder so you can store your spoon securely while you enjoy your drink. This pattern is the 9th free crochet pattern of the Advent Calendar Mystery Crochet Along.
This elegant and handy gift pattern is the 9th pattern (December 9th) of the 24 patterns. It features a button with a loop to hold the mug in place inside the mug cozy. It also has a spoon holder to securely hold onto your spoon while you drink your beverage.

How to Crochet the Mug Cozy with Spoon Holder
Materials you will need
- 4.5 mm hook -> I used a Furls Crochet Metal Streamline Hook – use NICKI15 for 15% off
- Scissors
- tapestry needle
- button
Gauge
3 sts x 5 rounds = 1 square inch
Size
3.5 inches in diameter, 3.5 inches in height

Pattern Notes
First, you’ll start by working from the bottom up for the mug cozy and you’ll add a loop. Lastly, you’ll crochet the spoon holder and sew it onto the mug cozy.
Instructions for the Mug Cozy
Start with a Magic Ring
R1: ch 1, add 7 sc to the ring, close the ring, and crochet in continuous rounds (use a stitch marker)
R2: 2 sc per st
R3: *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * all around
R4: *1 sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * all around
R5: *1 sc in the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st, repeat from * all around, now sl st, TURN
R6: 1 sc in the blo all around, sl st, turn
R7-8: 1 sc in each st, sl st, turn
R9: 1 sc in each st, until you have 1 left, turn
R10-20: 1 sc in each st, turn
Add your loop (chain 20 and sl st), sew on your button.
Spoon Holder for the Mug Cozy
R1: Ch 4, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc per st, turn
R2-5: 1 sc per st, turn
Then sew on the spoon holder to the cozy. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
