This is a free Tunisian Crochet pattern for a double-thick potholder. Make this easy Tunisian crochet potholder to use in your kitchen or as an easy gift.
Recently, I was using one of my crochet potholders and I actually burned my fingers when handling a hot bowl! As much as I love to crochet, its ‘hole-y’ texture isn’t exactly practical when it comes to making things like potholders.
Of course, I needed to come up with a solution so I didn’t burn my fingers again. So I got to work researching the best crochet stitches for a functional potholder.
I found myself reaching for my Tunisian crochet hook because I knew that would be my best bet for creating a nice, solid fabric. Next, I got to work making this crochet potholder by working in the round and then folding it and sewing it together making this a double-thick Tunisian crochet potholder.
I’ve been thoroughly happy with the end result! Plus I haven’t burned my fingers again since using this potholder either so I’d say that this design is a success.

How to Tunisian Crochet a Double Thick Potholder
Materials you will need
- 5.5mm double-sided Tunisian Crochet Hook
- scissors
- tapestry needle
Gauge
4 TKS x 5 rows = 1 square inch
Size
6 x 6 inches

- TSS = Tunisian Simple Stitch
- TKS = Tunisian Knit Stitch
- sl st = slip stitches
- ch = chain

Free Written Pattern for the Tunisian Crochet Potholder
The potholder is made by crocheting one row and then crocheting in rounds around it until the height of the rounds is half the size of the length. Then you’ll fold the corners inward and sew closed the seam.
I used the same skein (pulled from the center and the other side) to crochet in rounds. But it can twist and tangle, be careful!
R1: Ch 31, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc into the back bump of each ch
You’ll now switch to Tunisian Crochet and crochet around that one row of regular crochet in a circle/continuous rounds.
R1 F: 1 TSS per st (forward pass)
R1 R: work stitches off the hook (return pass) using the other end of the double ended hook whenever you can’t add more loops to your hook
Once you reach the first TSS stitch, switch to TKS
R2 F: 1 TKS per st (forward pass)
R2 R: work stitches off the hook (return pass) using the other end of the double-ended hook whenever you can’t add more loops to your hook
Continue R2 the height of the rounds is half the size of the length of the width. Now fold the corners inward and sew the touching round together. Add a loop using chains and fasten it off.
Congratulations! Your beautiful new Tunisian crochet potholder is now finished and ready to use. Make several of these for your own kitchen or gift them to your friends, family, or co-workers.
