This is a free tutorial to learn how to crochet rounds with the Thermal Stitches which works for any thermal crochet stitch. The tutorial has both step-by-step photos and a video tutorial.

Thermal Crochet is also known as the double-thick crochet technique. Or better known as the thickest crochet stitch technique in the world. Why? Because it’s crocheted in half a row at a time back and forth in a vertical zig-zag. Although the stitches are a bit challenging on their own, it’s also very beneficial to learn how to crochet them in rounds.

And just like increasing and decreasing are different using Thermal Crochet, it’s also different to crochet them in rounds. But it’s not as hard as it sounds. The hardest part is to understand the concept mentally. Once you get it, it’s super easy and you will love it and want to use it all the time.

Now, are you ready to learn how to crochet rounds using any Thermal Crochet Stitch?

Crocheting any Thermal Crochet stitch in rounds is a tiny bit different than normal crochet rounds.

The first thing to know is that you can’t crochet continuous rounds using the Thermal crochet stitch technique. As you always crochet in ½ rows you need to catch up with the second half of the round.

That brings me to the next important point, you will not be crocheting this technique in rounds by going in the same direction in each round.

In fact, you’ll be crocheting as you would be crocheting this in rows. So back and forth. I like to call it the C technique. So in a C shape you go from one end to the other end, then you’re going back where you came from.

The only difference is that you have a slip stitch in between.

To make it easier, as mentioned and shown in the video, it’s best to use a stitch marker and mark your slip stitch in each round.

Also, slip stitching into the slip stitch (non are counted as a stitch), is the best technique in this case.

Thermal Crochet Stitches

There are different types of Thermal Crochet Stitches. But crochet rounds using the Thermal Crochet technique are the same for any of the stitches. This tutorial will focus on the single crochet version.

Here are a few Thermal Crochet Stitches to learn:

Crochet a Chain for Rounds

So first, crochet a chain in the length you need or desire.

One Basic Crochet Round

Then close the circle and crochet 1 round of a basic crochet stitch (so if you use the single thermal crochet stitch, you’ll be crocheting a single crochet round as the first round). Mark your slip stitch with a stitch marker.

Then turn around and crochet in the direction where you came from using the thermal crochet stitch technique as if it were a row. Slip stitch to the slip stitch and move up your stitch marker and continue this technique until you’re done.

Then continue crocheting rounds in the same way. If you want to learn how to increase, be sure to check out my detailed tutorial for that as well:

What Projects Can I use Thermal Stitch Rounds for?

Thermal Crochet is a half-a-row crochet technique that makes it the thickest crochet stitch and technique in the world. Therefore, you can use this stitch and technique for pretty much any pattern.

It requires a lot more yarn as it’s double thick. But it’s worth it. You’ll be able to keep your skin protector from the heat or cold temperatures, but also provide stability and sturdiness in bags. Plus you will not need any lining as it’s so thick nothing will fall out.

My favorite way to crochet rounds using the Thermal Crochet Stitch is for beanies, hats, bags, and baskets as well as coasters.
