Glow In The Dark Crochet Beanie – Free Pattern

This is a free pattern for the Glow In The Dark Crochet Beanie. This hat pattern is made using Lion Brand DIY Glow Yarn.
When I stumbled across this Lion Brand Yarns’ DIY Glow yarn at Joann, I knew I needed to make something with it for the Halloween season. I got right to work making a simple beanie pattern. I liked the idea of a ‘blank canvas’ so that you can customize this hat to your liking. Of course, you can always just wear the crochet beanie as is! This would make a fun hat to go out trick-or-treating in or to wear on your porch as you hand out candy.
However, if you’re looking for some fun ways to add to your glow-in-the-dark crochet beanie, I have some great ideas!
First, you could make a spider pom pom and add it to the top of your beanie. This is literally just as simple as making a traditional pom and adding eyes and legs. I have a very easy tutorial for that right here.
Second, you could get some black glitter foam sheets and cut out the face of a Jack O’lantern. Then you’d just have to arrange the pieces and hot glue them to your hat. Here is an easy tutorial for that here. Super simple!
Overall, I really enjoyed working with the DIY Glow yarn! By the time you’re finished making this easy crochet beanie, turn out the lights for a fun surprise 🙂

Written Instructions for the Glow In The Dark Crochet Beanie
NOTE: This pattern is written for a teen/adult-size beanie! Please click HERE to see the measurements of other hat or beanie sizes, or see the reference table below.
Round 1: Start with making a Magic Ring (if you have never made one, please click HERE for the instructions) and add 12 dc’s
Now we start increasing. I will mark the number that will increase by ONE per ONE ROUND as well as show what that means in BOLD NUMBERS.
Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in the same stitch all around, sl st to the first st (24 sts)
Round 3: Ch 2, *1 dc in the same stitch as the beginning chain, 2 dc in the same stitch, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st (36 sts)
The first dc always goes in the same stitch as the beginning chain as you do not count it as a stitch.
Round 4: Ch 2, *1 dc in the next 2 sts, 2 dc in the same stitch, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st (48 sts)
Round 5: Ch 2, *1 dc in the next 3 sts, 2 dc in the same stitch, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st (60 sts)
You will increase until you reach the diameter of the head you are making the beanie or hat for.
In my case, after round 5 I realized I reached the diameter I needed. Now it is time to just extend the beanie to the size that equals the height of the head.
To make it easier to see, I used orange yarn for the pictures.
Round 6: Ch 2, 1 dc in each stitch all around, sl st to the first st (60 sts)
Round 7- 12: repeat round 6

Now I would like to add a ribbing on the bottom of the beanie. If you do not like that, add and subtract rounds to get the right height. The ribbing is made out of FPDC’s and BPDC’s. If you have never made Front Post Double Crochets or Back Post Double Crochets, please click HERE for the tutorial.
Round 13 – 15: Ch 2, *1 FPDC, 1 BPDC, repeat from * all around, sl st to the first st (60 sts)
Now you can fasten off and weave in the ends.
You can also add a Spider Pom-Pom on top to make the Glow In The Dark Crochet Beanie into a hat. If you have never made a spider pom-pom before, please check out my tutorial HERE.
