Tunisian Wave Stitch
The Tunisian wave stitch is packed with rippling texture and rhythmic color changes that almost feel like your hook is sketching gentle ocean swells right into your fabric. The waves also look a bit like rolling hills, and they sure are pretty.
It has that eye-catching, “wait, how did you make that?” quality while still being totally approachable once you get the flow down.
Whether you are brand new to Tunisian crochet or already collecting hooks like they are trading cards, this tutorial walks you through the stitch’s signature wave pattern in a clear and friendly way.
By the time you finish, you will not only understand the mechanics of the Tunisian wave stitch, but you will also be able to remix this stitch into blankets, scarves, bags, and just about anything that deserves a little extra visual drama.

How to Crochet Tunisian Wave Stitch
The most important part of this tutorial is to watch the video above, as it will guide you through the stitch pattern step by step, but I put the written directions below as well.
Note: For the last stitch of the forward pass of each row, be sure to insert the hook through both vertical loops of last st on the edge of the work. This is referred to as the “edge stitch” and it ensures a clean, straight edge. You might also sometimes see it referred to as the lts, which is short for last Tunisian stitch.
1. For the foundation row, start with a foundation chain with a multiple of 10+3 and crochet 1 row using the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS). Do both the forward pass and reverse pass (aka return pass) as normal.
Remember, we don’t turn at the end of each row for Tunisian crochet. You always have the right side of the work facing you, and you just work back and forth.

2. In the following row, skip the first vertical bar (edge stitch), then crochet *1 TSS in the next 2 sts, 1 TDS (Tunisian Double Crochet Stitch) in the next 2 sts, 1 TTR (Tunisian Treble Crochet Stitch) in the next 3 sts, 1 TDS (Tunisian Double Crochet Stitch) in the next 2 sts, 1 TSS, repeat from * until you have 2 sts left, 1 TSS and 1 edge stitch (TSS)
Work a standard reverse pass, switching colors during the last yarn over and pull through. Here we see the Tunisian wave stitch starting to take shape!

3. Using the new color, crochet 1 row using the Tunisian Simple Crochet (TSS) Stitch (normal forward and reverse pass) switching colors during the last yarn over and pull through

4. With the first color, ch 2 (edge stitch), * 1 TTR in the next 2 sts, 1 TDS in the next 2 sts, 1 TSS in the next 3 sts, 1 TDS in the next 2 sts, 1 TTR, repeat from * until you have 2 sts left, 1 TTR in the last 2 sts (even edge stitch). Work the reverse pass as normal, switch colors during the last yarn over and pull through.

5. Using the 2nd color, crochet 1 row using the Tunisian Simple Crochet (TSS) Stitch (normal forward and reverse pass) switching colors during the last yarn over and pull through

Repeat steps 2-5 for the pattern
