Free Spike Stitch Crochet Basket Pattern with removable divider & 3 video tutorials! Perfect for storing yarn & hooks. The basket is made with Mary Maxim yarns and stabilized with a plastic divider.
Have you ever found yourself digging through a tangle of yarn and hooks, trying to remember where you last placed your favorite 5.5mm hook or that tiny pair of scissors? I’ve been there too—and let me tell you, the frustration is real. That’s exactly why I designed this Spike Basket with a removable divider. It’s not just a pretty project—it’s a game-changer for any crocheter who loves staying organized (or at least wants to try!).
Sturdy Crochet Basket Pattern
This crochet basket pattern uses the eye-catching spike stitch to add a touch of color and texture. But what really sets it apart is the clever removable divider inside. Whether you’re storing yarn, hooks, stitch markers, or even little WIPs, this basket keeps everything in its place—and looks cute doing it! I used a sturdy, bulky yarn (Mary Maxim Titan) as the base and accented it with colorful gradient DK yarn (Mary Maxim Prism), and a plastic canvas, giving it both structure and style.

If you’ve been following my Mystery Crochet Alongs (MCAL), you might already recognize this project—it was a hit! Now it’s available as a full, free pattern with 3 step-by-step video tutorials. It’s beginner-friendly but also packed with crochet tips to help you improve your technique while creating something super practical.
This previous Mystery CAL pattern is broken into clear, manageable steps, just like the CAL was. It was designed to keep you excited and engaged, with each new section building upon the last. If you missed the CAL, now’s your chance to enjoy this fun, beginner-friendly project at your own pace!
Let’s dive into this fun and functional pattern together—you’re going to love it!

Crochet Spike Stitch Basket
Continue where you left off in Part 2
R14: 1 hdc in blo per st, all around
Now, drop the bulky (leave a loop hanging), and start with the DK yarn (for the odd rounds only)
See video 2 for a detailed explanation and view!
R15: start above the first st of R14, 1 sc per st
Drop the DK, pick up the bulky
R16: 1 hdc per st, all around
Drop the bulky, pick up the DK
R17: 1 sc, *1 spike st to the first DK round (straight down), 1 sc in 12 sts, repeat from * all around (there are always 12 sts between each spike st – count to make sure you have that correct!)
Drop the DK, pick up the bulky
R18: 1 hdc per st, all around
Drop the bulky, pick up the DK
R19: *1 sc per st until you are ABOVE the last spike st from the previous DK round, 1 spike st to the first DK round (straight down), repeat from * all around
Drop the DK, pick up the bulky
Repeat R18 and R19 until you have 7 DK rounds, then cut the DK yarn, weave in ends, and continue with just the bulky yarn
R28: 1 hdc per st, all around

R29: 1 sc in the 3rd loop behind the V per st, all around

R30-39: 1 sc per st
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Optionally, cut plastic canvas (I used these ones) such that you can add it behind the crochet lining (R30-39). I added 2 pieces for extra stability.
Assembly of the divider
Split up the insert piece into 4 parts and make 4 corners. Sew right down to keep corners in place. See video 3 for a more detailed explanation.

Then add the divider to the basket. DONE 🙂
