Crochet Heart Pouch – Easy & Quick Free Pattern

This free crochet pattern is for a cute and quick to make heart pouch with an opening in the center of one side of the heart to add tissues, candy, gift cards, letters, and more.
My husband has been crazy busy which means I have more time to watch my favorite shows and crochet. While I was watching TV, I suddenly got an idea. I wanted to crochet a tissue box cover, but I thought… well, what could I make that many crocheters could make really quickly and use as a gift to add something special? All I could think about was a functional crochet heart pattern great for small treats (like little candies), tissues, a lip balm, or a gift card, or maybe for a cute love letter for someone very special. It’s the perfect right size for any of these gifts for Valentine’s Day.
My first thought was to add an opening on the top or bottom of the heart, but it would need a button or closure to keep from losing what would be placed inside. So I scratched that idea very quickly. So a better option was to make one full heart and two half hearts and sew them together to have an opening in the center of the heart on one side. This small pouch is the perfect quick project you can even make much bigger (can you imagine a bigger heart you can add maybe a bigger or a pillow insert) using heavier weight yarn and a larger hook.
Within about an hour, I designed and finished the heart pouch for Valentine’s Day. And it turned out so cute, didn’t it?
And of course, if you want to make this heart a non-red color, there are many color possibilities to make anyone happy.
Crocheting with Furls Wander Yarn
I have been wanting to test out this new yarn Furls just launched for months, since I first heard about them creating some acrylic yarn. And it didn’t disappoint. It was the perfect yarn for this heart pouch project.
The yarn is soft, slightly silky (which is good!), and has very bold colors. The perfect combination for projects that I typically work up.
I would suggest you check out this amazing new yarn and get yourself some! Furls Crochet still has the whims merino yarn which would also work for this project (choose worsted if you have it).
So, let me now give you the supplies you need in order to crochet this cute heart pouch pattern.

Written Pattern for the Heart Pouch:
First, you will crochet a chain that you expand with single crochet stitches to make it look like a heart. Then you will crochet 2 heart halves which will then be sewn to the full heart to turn it into a pouch with an opening where the 2 halves meet.
Crochet the full heart
Start with a chain of 19
R1: 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each of the next 7 chs, skip 2 ch, 1 sc in each of the next 7 chs, 3 sc in the next ch. The next stitches you’ll crochet on the other side of the chain: 1 sc in each of the next 8 chs (the last sc in the ch space), 2 ch, 1 sc in each of the next 9 chs (first sc in the ch space)
Crochet in continuous rounds, so be sure to use a stitch marker
R2: 1 sc, 3 sc in the next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts, 3 sc in 1 st, 1sc in the next st, 3 sc in 1 st, 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts (the last sc in the ch 2 space), 2 ch, 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts (first sc in the ch 2 space), 3 sc in the last st
R3: 1 sc, 3 sc in the next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 7 sts, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 7 sts, 3 sc in 1st, 1sc in the next st, 3 sc in 1 st, 1 sc in each of the next 12 sts (the last sc in the ch 2 space), 2 ch, 1 sc in each of the next 12 sts (first sc in the ch 2 space), 3 sc in the last st

R5: [2 sc in 1 st] twice, sc in each of the next 9 sts, skip 2 sts, sc in each of the next 9 sts, [2sc in 1 st] three times, sc in each of the next 18 sts, (the last sc in the ch 2 space), 2 ch, sc in each of the next 18 sts, (first sc in the ch 2 space), 2 sc in 1 st
R6: [2 sc in 1 st] twice, sc in each of the next 10 sts, skip 2 sts, sc in each of the next 10 sts, [2sc in 1 st] three times, sc in each of the next 20 sts, (the last sc in the ch 2 space), 2 ch, sc in each of the next 20 sts, (first sc in the ch 2 space), 2 sc in 1 st
Crochet the 2 heart halves
Make 2 of the below pattern to create 2 halves
Start with a chain of 9
R1: 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in each of the next 6 chs, 3 sc in last ch. The next stitches you’ll crochet on the other side of the chain: 1 sc in each of the next 5 chs, 1 sc dec over the last 2 sts, turn
R2: skip 1st st, 1 sc in the next 5 sts, 3 sc in 1 st, 1sc in the next st, 3 sc in 1 st, 1 sc in the next 7 sts, 2 sc in the last st, turn
R3: 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in the next 10 sts, 3 sc in 1 st, 1sc in the next st, 3 sc in 1 st, 1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc dec over the last 2 sts, turn
R4: skip 1st st, 1 sc in the next 7 sts, 3 sc in 1 st, 1sc in the next st, 3 sc in 1 st, 1 sc in the next 13 sts, 2 sc in the last st, turn
R5: 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in the next 16 sts, 3 sc in 1 st, 1sc in the next st, 3 sc in 1 st, 1 sc in the next 7 sts, 1 sc dec over the last 2 sts, turn
R6: skip 1st st, 1 sc in the next 10 sts, 3 sc in 1 st, 1sc in the next st, 3 sc in 1 st, 1 sc in the next 18 sts, 2 sc in the last st
Now crochet a sl st row along the straight edge where you placed the increases and decreases at the beginning and end of each row.
Now, place the 2 halves on top of the full heart and sew all the way around. You can use the whip stitch, slip stitches, mattress stitch or any other method. It all depends on how you want the edge to look.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
