These little guys have big holiday energy—striped hats, fluffy beards, and now, the gorgeous texture of the harvest stitch to take things up a notch. It really fancies up the pattern but don’t worry it’s not as tricky as it looks!
This Christmas gnome is designed to fit over a mason jar. The hat can be moved from the top of the jar so you can store things inside or so you can add some lights to make your gnome glow with holiday delight!

Free Christmas Gnome Crochet Pattern
Materials you will need
- Lion Brand Heartland Yarn (251yd/100g, worsted acrylic yarn)
- Great Smoky Mountains (1 skein)
- Redwood (1 skein)
- 5 mm hook – WeCrochet Dots Hook
- Scissors
- tapestry needle
- Mason Jar 32 oz
- Hot glue
- Gnome Beard and Nose (or use faux fur yarn and a wooden bead)
- Pom pom
Note: there is no need for polyfill, as this gnome is designed to fit around a mason jar instead.
Gauge
(1 puff set + dc) x 2 rounds = 1 square inch
Size
Fits a 32 oz mason jar
Stitches used in the pattern
Learn all the basic crochet stitches HERE (US crochet terms and abbreviations)
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch (I use the invisible sl st – learn it here)
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- ATC = Alternative Turning Chain, stacked sc st in the height of a dc st
- Harvest Stitch
- blo = back loop only
- dec = decrease
- fpdc = front post double crochet
- bpdc = back post double crochet

ALL first dc sts are ATC, all rounds finish with a sl st
R1: Magic Ring (aka Magic Circle) and add 6 sc, close ring
R2: 2 sc per st
R3: (1 sc, 2 sc) x 6
R4: (1 sc in 2 sts, 2 sc) x 6
R5: (1 sc in 3 sts, 2 sc) x 6
R6: (1 sc in 4 sts, 2 sc) x 6
R7: (1 sc in 5 sts, 2 sc) x 6
R8: in blo, 1 sc per st
R9: *1 dc in 2 sts, sk 1 st, 1 harvest puff st, sk 1 st, repeat from * until the end
R10: *1 dc in 2 sts, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end
R11-19: *1 dc dec, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end, fasten off
Ch 70 for a drawstring (or make an i-cord), weave around R19 to tighten around mason jar
Glue on the beard and nose just below R19 or on top of R19 (won’t be able to move the drawstring after, though).
Hat in Red (Starting at the top of the hat and working our way down)
R1: MR, 4 dc, close the ring
R2: 2 sc per st
R3: *1 dc, sk 1 st, 1 harvest puff st, sk 1 st, repeat from * until the end
R4-5: *1 dc, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end
R6: *2 dc, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end
R7-8: *1 dc in 2 sts, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end
R9: *1 dc, 2 dc, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end
R10-12: *1 dc in 3 sts, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end
R13: *1 dc in 2 sts, 2 dc, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end
R14-18: *1 dc in 4 sts, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end
R19: *1 dc in 3 sts, 2 dc, 1 harvest puff st, repeat from * until the end

Fasten off and weave in ends.
Add gnome hat on top of the mason jar.
Glue on the pom pom.
Optionally add a christmas light string with a battery (like this set) on the inside.
