In this ‘soup-er’ collection of 10 free crochet soup bowl cozy patterns, you’ll find functional and fun cozies to use in your kitchen every day.
I never realized what an amazing addition to crochet soup bowl cozies could be to my kitchen. That is, until I made my first one. It was a game-changer!
No more racing across the kitchen from the microwave to the table with a hot bowl because my hands were burning. I think we’ve all been there, right? LOL.
At this point, having cotton bowl cozies readily accessible has become a staple in my kitchen. Everyone in my family now loves them and uses them all the time.
And who says you just have to use bow cozies for warm soups or a hot meal? You can also totally use them for ice cream. I sure do that. It’s important to keep your hands away from the heat or the icy cold temperatures.
I personally never used hot pads or pot holders that much. I always preferred a cozy as they typically have handles to carry the cozy with my bowl of chili, ice cream or a cereal bowl if I’m fancy.

A note on crochet bowl cozies:
While I personally do not recommend microwaving ANY yarn, whether it’s cotton or acrylic, some people will say that microwaving cotton yarn is fine. I do know some that use cotton cozies in their microwave all the time without issue. So I would say to microwave a cotton cozy at your own discretion. But NEVER put acrylic yarn in the microwave as it could melt.
Details on Crochet Bowl Patterns
A typical cozy crochet pattern for a bowl is made medium worsted weight yarn and a 4 or 5 mm crochet hook (use the hook size mentioned in the pattern), but you can totally use lighter or heavier weighted yarn as well. The amazing thing is that most patterns only use one skein if it’s a solid colored pattern.
Furthermore, you’ll notice that most bowl cozies are made from the bottom up in continuous rounds starting with a magic circle or magic ring.
No matter which pattern you pick, they all make the perfect gift, can be made in a variety of colors, and can be made for a standard size bowl or a taller bowl. But the bowl sizes do matter, so some of the patterns below are for the standard size and some for larger bowls.
