This free crochet pattern is for a Large Cotton Bowl Cozy, a modified version of the popular and trending “Cotton Bowl Cozy” which is for smaller bowls. This pattern uses 100% cotton WeCrochet Dishie yarn and includes a video tutorial.
It’s been a few years, but the Cotton Bowl Cozy pattern I published in 2018 and since then has gone viral and more and more popular over the years. Well, with popularity, designers of a specific pattern also get lots of requests for modifications. And finally, I had time to fulfill the first – of many – in terms of the cotton bowl cozy.
My original cotton bowl cozy pattern was designed for bowls about 5.5. inches in diameter. Well, this new pattern is bigger and will fit bowls that are about 7.5 inches in diameter. YAY! So excited. Soon I will fulfill more requested modifications, such as cozies for plates and mugs and so much more. Get ready for the entire collection of cotton cozies.
Wouldn’t that make a great crochet ebook? ❤️
Crocheting Bowl Cozies
Trust me when I say this, everyone can crochet a cotton bowl cozy. It’s actually not that difficult and only uses single crochet stitches with a few increases at the beginning and the end. Both patterns, the original one and this new one, include a video tutorial.
In fact, I even added small modifications for you to change up this pattern a tiny bit depending on how you want the corners of the bowl cozy to look. Some like it fancy, some don’t. So now you can pick which one you prefer and just use the pattern you like the most.
Best Yarn for Bowl Cozy Crochet Patterns
Well, that is a debated subject for sure. I recommend 100% cotton yarn at all times. WHY? Cause it works great for bowls with very hot content, such as soups, but also can be used for very cold food such as ice cream. Both scenarios are great to have a bowl cozy for. And the cotton yarn is ideal for those temperatures. It doesn’t melt or stretch a lot.
However, I can’t recommend that you put the cotton bowl cozy into the microwave. I suggest you warm up your meal in a microwave-safe bowl and the place the bowl into the cozy after. Then the cozy will protect your hands and you can be easily carried by holding onto the corners or from underneath.
So, let me now give you the supplies you need in order to crochet this amazing large bowl cozy pattern.

Start crocheting the circle
R1: Make a magic ring and add 6 sc’s. Close the ring. Use a stitch marker.
R2: 2 sc in each st
R3: *1 sc, 1 sc inc, repeat from * until the end of the round
R4: *1 sc in the next 2 sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R5: *1 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R6: *1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R7: *1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round

R12: *1 sc in the next 10 sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R13: *1 sc in the next 11 sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R14-28: 1 sc in each st
Crocheting the Bowl Height
R29: *1 sc in the next 12 sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R30: *1 sc in the next 13 sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R31: *1 sc in the next 14 sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R32: *1 sc in the next 23 sts, [2 sc, ch1, 2 sc] in the next st, repeat from * until the end of the round
R33-34: *1 sc in each st until the corner ch space, [2 sc, ch1, 2 sc] in the corner, repeat from * until the end of the round
The brackets in blue can also be replaced as if you don’t like the curl of the corner as the picture shows:
- [1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc] or
- [5 sc]
You are finished now. Fasten off and weave in your ends. If you wish you can add a little loop on one of the corners to be able to hang it up.
