Decreasing using the Thermal Crochet Technique is a bit different than normal increases.
In regular crochet, you’ll decrease somewhere in a row or round, and then you’re done and can move on.
But for Thermal crochet, it’s a 2 step process. You’ll decrease in one row or round and then need to finish the process in the following row/round.
Thermal Crochet Stitches
There are different types of Thermal Crochet Stitches. But the decreasing technique which is done over 2 rows is the same for any of the stitches.
Here are a few Thermal Crochet Stitches to learn:
- Single Thermal Crochet Stitch
- Half Double Thermal Crochet Stitch
- Double Thermal Crochet Stitch

Row 1 – Simple Thermal Crochet Decrease
So let’s start with step 1 – the easiest part!
Simple decrease by combining 2 stitches into one. So go through the 2 loops you always do to crochet a thermal crochet stitch, pick up a loop, and repeat that for the next stitch. Then yarn over and pull through both loops.
Row 2 – Thermal Crochet Decrease Stitch Adjustment
So, now you will turn, chain 1, and then you’ll see that you have 1 stitch, but 2 leftover stitches from the previous row or round.
So you’ll now place 1 stitch by going through the first back loop and the leftover stitch from the previous row or round.
Then you’ll skip the 2nd leftover loop and continue crocheting as normal. YES! Just skip that one leftover loop and ignore it.
The video tutorial shows this a lot more clearly.
Then continue crocheting as normal as you now have adjusted the stitch count accordingly and made up the decrease in the previous row.
What Projects can I use the Thermal Stitch Decrease for?
Thermal Crochet is a half-a-row crochet technique that makes it the thickest crochet stitch and technique in the world. Therefore, you can use this stitch and technique for pretty much any pattern.
It requires a lot more yarn as it’s double thick. But it’s worth it. You’ll be able to keep your skin protector from the heat or cold temperatures, but also provide stability and sturdiness in bags. Plus you will not need any lining as it’s so thick nothing will fall out.
One of my favorite ways to use this stitch is for potholders, but you can also use it for beanies and so much more.
