How to do the Reversible Crochet Mosaic Technique Double Sided + 6 Free Patterns

Upgrade your overlay mosaic crochet skills with this double-sided tutorial to create different images on the front and back sides of your work. Usually, the back side of crochet mosaic is plain stripes but not with this reversible technique!

Remember when you first stumbled upon the mosaic crochet technique? For me, it was a major ah-ha moment! Being able to create exciting images in my projects without changing colors in the middle of the row is a total game-changer.

If you’ve never tried the basic version of overlay mosaic crochet before, then I suggest you start there.

If you already know how to double crochet, single crochet, and work into the back loop or front loop only, then you’re already well on your way to learning it. Then come back here to learn this exciting spin on it!

Regular crochet mosaic only scratches the surface of what this exciting technique can offer. With the basic technique, the front looks great but the back is just plain stripes and that’s not always the look you’re going for.

Reversible vs Double Sided Reversible Overlay Crochet Mosaic

Projects like blankets, wearables and accessories greatly benefit from having both sides look presentable. No one wants to be constantly fussing with their items to perfectly display the “right side”.

If you’ve checked out my reversible overlay mosaic crochet tutorial (same image front and back) before, then you know that there are no wrong sides! The back side simply has the colors of the front side reversed (in color and image) like this:

Once you learn how to follow the instructions for the reversible version, then this double image version will be a piece of cake.

This new double-sided tutorial takes it one step further by creating a completely unique image on either side, not just a color reversal. That’s how you make one side have an image of a tree and the other side make an image of a heart.

How cool is that?!

How to Double Sided Crochet Mosaic Overlay – Video + Written Tutorials

Written Pattern Notes

Beginners – please go through the video above AND the other mosaic crochet tutorials linked above to learn all the different stitches step by step.

Once you understand and know how to crochet them all, this tutorial and technique will be very easy to understand. BUT it’s not where a beginner should start. 

To really learn this technique, it’s best to actually make a tiny swatch. 

Go through this 11 st x 11 row swatch to learn how to crochet all of these stitches and create a tree on the front and heart on the back. You can use 2-4 different colors.

Yarn choice doesn’t matter for this really, just use whatever weight matches your favorite hook.

Don’t focus on the Heart part of the Graph. That is just the reverse of how it will look like on the back. You’ll only crochet rows 1-11 for the Tree on the front and heart on the back.
