A 4 mm crochet hook is a 4 mm crochet hook, right? You might be surprised to learn just how much things can change when you switch it up with different types of crochet hooks.

Has this ever happened to you? You made a strong start on a new crochet project and then *poof* the crochet hook you were using disappeared! (Don’t you just hate when that happens??)

So, then you thought: “No big deal, I have different types of crochet hooks that are the same size as the one I was using.” So you grabbed a different brand of hook and you kept going with your project.

(and maybe you made a mental note to stop buying so many crochet hooks, and then promptly forgot about that resolution)

After another hours long session of relaxing time spent crocheting, you looked back on what you were working on and you said, “What the heck?! There is a noticeable difference between the two sections!”

So, what gives? Do you want an explanation for what happened? And would you like to know how different types of crochet hooks change the way you crochet? Let’s find out!

The Real Difference Between Different Types of Crochet Hooks

Ok, so the question is, do different hook brands – with the same hook size – create different effects?

YES! They do!

Take WeCrochet’s Dots hooks (longer but similar to Clover hooks) and Furls Crochet Metal Streamline hooks (or any of their hooks) as an example.

I love BOTH of them! YES! (and I’m certainly not trying to tell you to buy one over the other one) But I use them for different purposes.

Dots hooks are lighter than Furls hooks, which means they make it easier to change the pressure and force of your movements with the hook.

Although both experience the same gravity, a hook that is heavier in your hand moves faster and stronger, aka the Furls hooks.

That means Furls hooks will create looser tension when you crochet with them. And Dots hooks will create tighter tension.

So I prefer using Dots hooks for Amigurumi and projects that need tight stitches (like baskets, bags etc) and Furls hooks for pretty much anything else.

You can see in the images on this page how the right egg is a bit bigger than the left one, although I used the same yarn and the same pattern. All simply due to the different hook brand!
