Tunisian Crochet Stitches

Tunisian Crochet typically requires a special crochet hook. It’s either much longer than a normal crochet hook or has a cord. Furthermore, Tunisian Crochet Hooks do not come in any ergonomic style due to the way they are being used. You’ll be picking up stitches in the forward path – looks like knitting – and crocheting the stitches off in the reverse path.

Let’s grab your crochet hook – I used a 6.5mm Clover Tunisian Hook – and your yarn – I used a worsted weighted yarn – to practice these different ways to increase in Tunisian Crochet.

1. Increase: Yarn Over

This is the easiest way to increase a stitch in Tunisian Crochet. Simply yarn over and keep crocheting.

You will then have an extra loop on your hook which creates a new stitch in the following forward path.

2. Increase: Reverse Yarn Over (Yarn Under)

Similar to the yarn over, you can also yarn under and create an extra loop. But be careful as you need to make sure you hold your loop in place cause otherwise, you will crochet a Tunisian Purl stitch.

Once you finished the next stitch, it will look like this.

3. Increase: 2 Stitches onto same Stitch

Another way to increase is to take advantage of the fact that each stitch has 2 vertical bars, one in the front and one in the back. For this increase, you will crochet a stitch through both, one at a time, in order to create 2 stitches.

4. Increase: TKS and TSS

Another way to increase is to combine a Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) with a Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS). You will first crochet the TKS and then crochet the TSS, going through the vertical bar of the same stitch.

5. Increase: TSS and TFS

This is almost the reverse way of the TKS and TSS increase. Here you will crochet first a TSS and then crochet a Tunisian Full Stitch (TFS) in the space between the stitch you just crocheted and the following one, creating an extra loop on your hook as an increase.

6. Increase: TSS and motified TFS

This increasing technique is a modification of the previous one. First crochet a TSS and then crochet a TFS but go through the chain directly, instead of the chain space.

7. Increase: TSS and TRS

Finally, in this increasing technique, you’ll crochet a TSS first, and then crochet a TRS onto the back vertical bar of the same stitch.

Bonus: 8. Increase: a Chain

You can also add an additional chain at any time, typically done in the reverse path in order to create a space to insert your hook to add a stitch in the next forward path row.
