Learn all foundation linked crochet stitches in this tutorial. Single, Half Double, Double and Treble Crochet Stitches are demonstrated here. Including a video tutorial.
Many crocheters know about foundation crochet, which is also known as chainless foundation chains. But have you ever combined Linked Crochet with the chainless foundation chain crochet technique? It allows you to have no gaps between the stitches.
This fun way of crocheting creates such a dense fabric with virtually no holes through your work. It is desired for sturdy projects that need to hold their shape or have no gaps for items to fall through.
You can, of course, also crochet first one long chain, and then start crocheting Linked Crochet Stitches. But some crocheters consider it tedious, especially if you have too many chains and need to remove them later. Or you didn’t chain enough and need to rip it all back out.
However, with a little patience, any crocheter can learn how to make linked crochet stitches with this unique chainless foundation chain crochet tutorial. But let’s first define what each foundation crochet and linked crochet really is.

1. What is Chainless Foundation Crochet?
Chainless Foundation Crochet is a technique that allows you to crochet the long chain and the first row or round all at the same time.
No more ripping out chains when you didn’t crochet enough or too many of them.
In fact, I already have a chainless foundation crochet tutorial for regular single, half double, double, and treble crochet stitches. But now, let’s expand this technique further with Linked Crochet.
QUICK TIP: If you never tried foundation crochet before, try the regular version just mentioned first. The same is true for Linked Crochet. Never done it? Try normal linked crochet stitches, before attempting the linked foundation crochet stitches. Otherwise you might be too confused.
2. What is Linked Crochet?
Linked crochet is in its own category. It is a mix between standard crochet and Tunisian crochet. Standard crochet creates each stitch by itself, one at a time. On the other hand, Tunisian crochet creates many stitches at the same time. These are all connected together with a chain of stitches called the return pass.
However, linked crochet sits somewhere in between these two techniques. It creates one stitch at a time just like standard crochet. But it connects the stitches one at a time to the next stitch just like Tunisian crochet.
Linked crochet technique connects all the stitches together so they are no longer stand alone stitches. It means working this way removes the gaps from your work. This results in very thick and stiff fabric with minimal gaps between stitches. You can learn more Linked Crochet Stitch Tips and Tricks here.
3. Linked Foundation Crochet Stitch Types
Let’s hope right into the first version of foundation linked crochet which is with the single crochet stitch. Then we’ll talk about the other 3 basic crochet stitches: half double, double and treble. All in order of their height.
To make it a LOT more clear, be sure to watch the video tutorial above as it shows all stitches very clearly step by step. The video tutorial will be easier to understand than the written and photo tutorial, especially if you never used either technique before.
Ok, let’s pull out your hook and yarn and learn this special and unique technique. I used WeCrochet Dishie yarn and a Furls Crochet Odyssey hook for this demonstration.
Foundation Linked Single Crochet
Make a chain of 2
Now crochet a normal foundation single crochet for the first stitch. So draw up a loop from the first chain you made. Then make a chain through that loop. Then you will finish it like a normal single crochet: yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
*Next, you will insert your hook into the furthers away from the hook loop (of the 2 you just had on your hook before finishing the sc) of the finished sc.
Now insert the hook into the foundation chain you made in the previous stitch, yarn over pull through, then create a new chain (so yarn over pull through again). Now you have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 3. You finished a foundation linked single crochet.
Now repeat from * for more linked single crochet stitches using the foundation crochet technique.
Foundation Linked Half Double Crochet
Make a chain of 3
Draw up a loop from the second and first chain you made. Then make a chain through that last loop you just pulled up. Then you will finish it like a normal half double crochet: yarn over and pull through 3 loops.
*Next, you will insert your hook into the furthers away from the hook loop (of the 3 you just had on your hook before finishing the hdc) of the finished hdc, and yarn over pull through.
Now insert the hook into the foundation chain you made in the previous stitch, yarn over pull through, then create a new chain (so yarn over pull through again). Now you have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 3. You finished a foundation linked half double crochet.
Now repeat from * for more linked half double crochet stitches using the foundation crochet technique.
Foundation Linked Double Crochet
Make a chain of 3
Draw up a loop from the second and first chain you made. Then make a chain through that last loop you just pulled up. Then you will finish it like a normal double crochet: yarn over through 2 and pull through 2 loops.
*Next, you will insert your hook into the middle of stitch horizontal bar you see of the finished dc, and yarn over pull through.
Now insert the hook into the foundation chain you made in the previous stitch, yarn over pull through, then create a new chain (so yarn over pull through again). Now you have 3 loops on your hook, yarn over through 2 and pull through all 2. You finished a foundation linked double crochet.
Now repeat from * for more linked double crochet stitches using the foundation crochet technique.
Foundation Linked Treble Crochet
Make a chain of 4
Draw up a loop from the third, second and first chain you made. Then make a chain through that last loop you just pulled up. Then you will finish it like a normal treble crochet: [yarn over through 2] three times.
*Next, you will insert your hook into the horizontal bar you see of the finished tr, and yarn over pull through. Then insert the hook into the next horizontal bar you see of the finished tr, and yarn over pull through.
Now insert the hook into the foundation chain you made in the previous stitch, yarn over pull through, then create a new chain (so yarn over pull through again). Now you have 4 loops on your hook, [yarn over through 2] three times. You finished a foundation linked treble crochet.
Now repeat from * for more linked treble crochet stitches using the foundation crochet technique.
