This is a free crochet tutorial for making the perfect chainless foundation chain for single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), and triple crochet (tc). The tutorial has both photos and videos.

Do you ever get tired of chains – especially for projects that require a lot of them? Ever wish there was a way to skip the chains and save time by jumping right into the first row? You can! The chainless foundation chain series does just that. And as an added bonus, it works for stitches beyond just the single crochet stitch.

If you’re tired of chaining and want perfect foundation rows every time, please read below for the full tutorial.

The Secret to the Perfect Chainless Foundation Chains

One of the most frequently asked for videos and tutorials is the chainless foundation chains for single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet. Learn the secret to the perfect ones now!

First, if you don’t already know, the chainless foundation chain is when you crochet the chain row and the 1st row at the same time, saving time and making the crochet piece more stretchy and neater looking. Definitely worth learning and perfecting it.

I really love the chainless foundation chains. They are such a time saver. Knowing how to do the basic stitches, such as single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet, as a chainless foundation chain can be so important.

So many times, I create a huge project, but because I am designing it or adjusting another pattern for personal use, I do not know how many chains I need. As chains stretch differently than having the chain plus the first row done, you MUST crochet the first row as well to see how it works out.

Now, being able to do the chain and the first row at the same time can really help in such situations. This tutorial and technique is such basic knowledge or part of the Crochet 101 lesson, you will never do it any other way.

As many of you have trouble with just pictures, I created a very detailed video tutorial as well. Be sure to check it out as well. You can find it at the bottom of the tutorial.

I have so many other tutorials that are SOOOO worth checking out. OMG, I can’t believe some crocheters still do not know the best Tips and Tricks. I just can’t live without them.

Do you have trouble making the perfect beanie or hat? You must see this tutorial HERE!

I will now teach you step by step how to do each stitch, starting with sc, then hdc, then dc and finally tr.

Hi Nicki, I frequently use the chainless foundation stitches and truly love them. They’re especially great for blankets and hats. I wanted to point out though that in the written sc tutorial step 3 doesn’t include that you pull through one then in 4 pull through the final 2 stitches. It comes across a bit confusing. As one crocheter to another i wanted to help those that find written tutorials easier than following along to videos. Thank you for your tutorials, patterns and honest reviews. Happy Spring!
