This free pattern is for a Knit Look Crochet Hat. This pattern is made using only slip stitch and half double crochet slip stitch crochet stitches as well as worsted yarn.
One of my favorite crochet patterns to make and design is hats and beanies. And if a hat can look like it was knitted even though it was crocheted, then it makes me even happier.
I first learned how to knit from my grandma as a young teen and still rememeber what I made where I sat on her couch and that I used white yarn. I don’t remember if I ever finished the small rectangle and made anything with it.
But once I moved to the United States from Germany, I picked up knitting and again and also taught myself how to crochet. Although I mixed up single crochet stitches with slip stitches and had really tight tension that I gave up crocheting for a few months, I picked it back up when I found a granny square on my Facebook feed. I haven’t stopped crocheting since.
To honor my grandma and this story I used only slip stitches for this fun knit look hat crochet pattern. But I didn’t just use normal slip stitches, I also used half double crochet slip stitches. Yes, they exist!
And no worries I added a video tutorial for the entire process of making the hat.

Crocheting Hat Patterns
Hats can be crocheted many different ways. But for this Knit Look Crochet Hat Pattern I chose to use the flat “rectangle” version and then seam it up.
It’s the easiest way to crochet a hat and you can easily change the size by referencing the measurement of the table below. That even allows you to change the yarn weight and still use this pattern.

Free Written Pattern for the Knit Look Crochet Hat
Quick note: You can make this hat pattern for any hat size, just reference the table below. You can also make this hat non-slouchy. The pattern is written for slouchy/ folder over brim style.
Crochet Hat Pattern
First, use the above hat size reference table and not the head circumference for that head you’re making the hat for. Next note the height of the hat. If you want to make it slouchy or with fold over brim add 2 -3 inches for the height.
The below pattern is for an adult size, as an example. Make sure to measure the “height” once you made the first row as the chain stretch prevents accurate measurements.
Furthermore, the video tutorial above demonstrates each step of the pattern including the stitch tutorial, finishing the hat and adding the pom pom.
Ch 59
R1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, crochet 1 hdc sl st in each ch until you have 6 chs left, in the last 6 chs crochet 1 sl st in each, turn
Read here why I do not use turning chains.
R2: 1 sl st in the blo for the next 6 sts, then 1 hdc sl st in each st until the end, turn
R3: 1 hdc sl st, in each st until you have 6 sts left, then 1 sl st in each st, turn
Repeat R2 and R3 until you have 22 inches when measuring the row side of the hdc slip stitches.
Now fold the flat piece in half and either sllip stitch the first and last row together (using blo) or use the mattress stitch to sew it together.
Next, use a tapestry needle and weave your yarn around the edge of the slip stitches (where the hook is pointing). Then pull the yarn and close the hole and fasten off and weave in your ends.
Add Pom Pom to Knit Look Crochet Hat
To add the pom pom with the snap button, make sure to position the snap button correctly onto the top of the hat and sew it onto the hat. I show how to do that in the video above. Then add your pom pom to the snap button and enjoy your new hat.
