Easy Free Crochet Chunky “Knit” Hat Pattern with Pom Pom

This free crochet pattern is for the Chunky Knit-Like Hat that is inspired by the hat an American woman was wearing at the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea in 2018.
It seems that the hat not only looked awesome and cozy but also turned into a new crochet trend overnight. Well, I loved it as much as everyone else, so I had to make one for myself as well. Of course, the original hat was knitted. So it inspired me to make a crochet chunky “knit” hat pattern that uses a crochet knit look stitch, called the Waistcoat Stitch.
How to crochet a flat chunky “knit” hat
It is actually so easy to make. In fact, it is not made like the other ones. My pattern may not look exactly like it, but it is made in a round whereas the other ones seem to be made flat first.
Crochet Hats can be made in three different ways. For this specific hat pattern, I choose to make it as a flat rectangle first and then sew it together to turn it into three-dimensional crochet chunky hat.
And yes, the pattern does come with a video tutorial. I show exactly how you can achieve the “knit” look effect when crocheting the waistcoat stitch in combination with the half double crochet.
How to make the Chunky Pom Pom for the Hat
And did you see the huge fluffy pom-pom? I love it. Believe it or not, I made the pom pom using my iPhone 7 Plus. Haha. It was the perfect size for it. And it turned out great, right?
To create this fluffy huge chunky pom pom, I made sure to use the same bulky yarn I used for the crochet chunky “knit” hat.
The yarn I used is by Premier Yarns and is called Serenity Chunky which is a number 5 bulky yarn weight. I really like this acrylic yarn. I also used it for a crochet cardigan and pillow case cover pattern.

Ch 40, slip stitch the ends together to make a circle (tutorial to prevent twisting is HERE)
Round 1: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st, sl st to the first st (40 sts)
Round 2 – 25: Ch 1, * 1 bp hdc, 1 wst, repeat from *all around, sl st to the first st
Fasten off and weave the end through the top rim, then pull tight to close the hole.
To make the chunky yarn pom pom, I wrapped the bulky yarn around my iPhone 7 Plus length-wise. You can use a pom pom maker or any other phone or cardboard paper for it as well.
Then tied the strands together in the middle before cutting them on the loops to make the pom pom fluffy.
Also I gave it a quick “hair cut” to look even and then attached it to the Chunky “Knit” Hat.
