I was excited to chat with Veronika from Blue Star Crochet. She is based all the way over in the United Kingdom, however, that is not where she grew up! Find out a little more about my latest guest.
You might have seen Veronika’s wonderful designs before, but we have some juicy details that not everyone will know.
I’m so excited that Veronika agreed to join me for my podcast called Nicki’s Crochet Podcast where I try to reveal crochet designer secrets and allow you to see designers from a totally different perspective.

Summary of Episode 14 with Veronika
We started chatting about where Veronika grew up and how life has led her to the United Kingdom where she settled. She traveled to UK for a gap year before going to university. However, guess how many years the initial “gap year” has turned into?
She was taught to crochet by her mum and used to make simple projects in single and double crochet. Going through teenage years, crochet took the back seat for a little bit.
I was amazed that Veronika re-discovered crochet and learned new stitches and techniques after she moved to UK.
After she had her first son, she embarked on a journey to make items for him. Putting her newly learned skills to the test, she made a Tunisian crochet raglan-style cardigan for her son.
She took a quick snap and sent it to an editor of one of the big crochet magazines in UK. To her “utter shock” she got a reply and got her very first design published in a magazine.
I was amazed at the combination of stitches and techniques Veronika used in her very first pattern and the complexity.
That is how her journey as a crochet designer started. Veronika then continues to work with different magazines and yarn companies.
I laughed so hard when Veronika shared a funny story about crocheting what she anticipated to be a cute bunny. However, the mix-up between US and UK terms has turned it into “something else”!
Veronika enjoys crocheting and designing garments. She also loves grading them over nine different sizes.
I love that Veronika has her defined style, she creates modern and timeless pieces. She wants people to crochet pieces that will last them a few seasons as it is a big project.
Veronika shares a funny story that involved a piece of black yarn she thought was a spider. I could not stop laughing when Veronika retold the story, I felt like I was there.
