Free Yarn Filet Crochet Bookmark Pattern
This post includes affiliate links.
This is a free cute filet crochet yarn bookmark and great for crochet beginners and filet crochet lovers and made with fingering yarn.
Filet Crochet can be difficult at first because the technique requires you to think a bit differently when crocheting in rows or rounds. But once you understand how to crochet and read filet crochet patterns and graphs you can make any Filet Crochet pattern you ever dreamed of.
This Yarn Bookmark is actually much easier than you might think. You could even turn it into a wallhanging if you like and use thicker yarn. The pattern pdf and Filet Crochet Ebook even include the alphabet as a graph in case you want to make bookmarks with different words. The pattern includes a few video tutorials as it’s broken up into many pieces as it used to be part of a mystery crochet along.

How to: Understanding Filet Crochet
There are several types and versions of Filet Crochet. We’ll focus on only one right now and that one is called the 3-DC Filet Crochet which means 3 stitches make up one pixel, but the 3rd stitch overlaps one of the stitches of the next pixel.
A white pixel is also called “open mesh” and in 3-DC Filet Crochet is crocheted as: 1 dc, ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc (but the last dc is also the first dc of the next pixel).
A black pixel is called called “closed mesh” and in 3-DC Filet Crochet is crocheted as: 1 dc in the next 3 stitches (but the last dc is also the first dc of the next pixel).
But you can also turn it around, and consider the first stitch as an edge stitch (for me it’s the ATC) and then consider the white pixel as (ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc) and the black pixel as (1 dc in the next 2 sts). That usually makes it easier for the mind to comprehend.
I wrote the pattern in a way for you to learn to read the white and black graph commonly used for Filet Crochet. But to make it more clear I also added the symbolic universal language chart below to understand the graph better. So you have 3 options to use for each letter.

Each row starts with 1 dc as ch3 (count as stitch) or as an ATC (alternative turning chain = stacked single crochets)
You can also use the graph below.
Ch 16
Row 1: 1 ATC, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 7
Row 2: 1 ATC, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 1, (ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in the next st) x 1, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 3, (ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in the next st) x 1, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 1
Row 3: 1 ATC, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 1, (ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in the next st) x 2, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 2, (ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in the next st) x 1, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 1

Row 6: 1 ATC, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 1, (ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in the next st) x 1, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 3, (ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in the next st) x 1, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 1
Row 7: 1 ATC, (1 dc each in the next 2 sts) x 7
Quick note: I made the chart below with ATC stitches as the first stitch per row and they are symbolized as 2 single crochet stitches stacked on top of each other. You can also replace it with a ch 3, but both count as a stitch.

Continue crocheting after the last row AND reattach the yarn below row 1 – so on both sides and do the following:
R1: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in each st until the last 2 sts, 1 sc dec, turn
Repeat R1 until you have 3 sts left, do a decrease over those last 3 sts.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
