Snowflake Messy Bun Beanie – Free Crochet Pattern

This snowflake messy bun beanie is a great winter accessory pattern. Make you very own messy bun beanie or as a gift for loved ones!
Since the Waistcoat stitch started trending I started to think about other patterns to create besides the “Love is in the Air Beanie“.
So I created this FREE pattern which is called the Snowflakes Messy Bun Beanie. And I am in love with it.
I have been wearing it since I created it. In fact, as you can see, it can be worn as a Ponytail Hat also.
The pattern below is a teen/adult size, but with some experience can be made into different sizes.
One way would be to use a smaller/larger hook size or to decrease/increase according to the amount of multiples (repeats) used.
Snowflake Messy Bun Beanie Details
This pattern calls for multiples of 14 stitches. Which in the teen/adult size adds up to 70 stitches in one round.
So in order to create a hat for a younger child, try to increase in the beginning only.
Keep increasing until you have for example 56 stitches in a round. That way you repeat the snowflake pattern only 4 times all the way around.
This is instead of 5 times, making the snowflake messy bun beanie in total smaller.
You will need:
- 3.5mm and 5.0mm hook
- Tapestry needle and scissors
- Worsted weighted yarn, I used Premier Anti-Pilling Yarn in colors aubergine and snow white (affiliate) It is all together about 200 to 250 yards. So you need one skein of each, but you will not use it all.
- Hair tie
Gauge:
4 wst x 4 rows = 1 square inch
Special Stitches:

HI,
this messy bun hat doesn’t indicate how much yarn ? just says type used.
Thanx
So sorry, I will add it. It is all together about 200 to 250 yards. So you need one skein of each, but you will not use it all.
I tried to put in the code to get the free pattern before the time today and it wouldn’t give it to me….
Some people added the ! by accident
Make sure it is just. LOVEHAT
Otherwise please contact Ravelry.
Is there a better way to hide the white yarn on the inside of the hat? The snowflakes are so spread out that the white yarn lays like a straight line in the inside of the beanie.
I have not found a better way as this is a waistcoat stitch pattern. I am sorry
