Now, let’s get started with the Apache Tears Scarf. I mentioned below how you can adjust the pattern to make it work for you.

Materials:

Stitches used, in US terms:

  • sc = single crochet
  • tr = treble crochet
  • sc in BLO = single crochet in back loop only
  • Apache Tears (1 sc in BLO in 4 stitches, 1 tr 3 rows/rounds down into the front loop that was skipped), click HERE for the full video and photo tutorial

Final Sizes:

Scarf: 40 x 7.5 in

Gauge:

4 sc x 3 rows = 1 square inch

Instructions:

BE SURE TO SEE MY APACHE TEARS STITCH TUTORIAL, IF YOU HAVE NEVER MADE IT BEFORE. YOU CAN FIND IT HERE!

All starting chains are not counted and the first stitch of every round or row goes into the same stitch as the starting chain.

You can make the scarf as long or as short as you want. The Scarf is 40 inches long and has 135 stitches across. As long as you keep the stitches a multiple of 5, you can adjust the pattern easily.

The scarf pattern is made that you will only work from one side to the other. Besides after the chainless foundation chain row, you will never turn your work, but cut your yarn and start over in the front. I will NOT mention it after every row, just in the beginning, but you will need to do it after every row!

Start with the color Dublin

Row 1: Make a chainless foundation chain of 135 single crochets (or ch 136 and place 1 sc in each chain to have 135 sts), ch 1, turn

Row 2 – 3: 1 sc in the BLO in each st, cut the yarn and start fresh in the next row

Change color to Red

Row 4: ch 1, *1 sc in the BLO in the first 4 stitches, then crochet 1 tr down 3 rows into the skipped front loop, skip 1 stitch (behind the tr) and repeat from * all around, then sl st to the first st

Row 5: ch 1, *1 tr 3 rows down, sk 1 st, 4 sc in the BLO, repeat from *, sl st to the first st

Row 6: ch 1, 1 sc in the BLO, *1 tr 3 rows down, sk 1 st, 4 sc in the BLO, repeat from *, the last 3 stitches are sc’s in the BLO, sl st to the first st

Change color to White

Row 7: ch 1, 1 sc in the BLO in the next 2 stitches, *1 tr 3 rows down, sk 1 st, 4 sc in the BLO, repeat from *, until the last 2 stitches which are 2 sc’s in the BLO, sl st to the first st

Row 8: ch 1, 1 sc in the BLO in the next 3 stitches, *1 tr 3 rows down, sk 1 st, 4 sc in the BLO, repeat from *, until the last 3 stitches which are 3 sc’s in the BLO, sl st to the first st

Row 9: Ch 1, 1 sc in the BLO in the next 4 stitches, *1 tr 3 rows down, sk 1 st, 4 sc in the BLO, repeat from *, sl st to the first st

Change color to Dublin

Row 10: repeat Row5

Row 11: repeat Row 6

Row 12: repeat Row 7

Change color to Red

Row 13: repeat Row 8

Row 14: repeat Row 9

Row 15: repeat Row 5

Change color to White

Row 16: repeat Row 6

Row 17: repeat Row 7

Row 18: repeat Row 8

Change color to Dublin

Row 19: repeat Row 9

Row 20: repeat Row 5

Row 21: repeat Row 6

Change color to Red

Row 22: repeat Row 7

Row 21: repeat Row 8

Row 23: repeat Row 9

Change color to White

Row 24: repeat Row 5

Row 25: repeat Row 6

Row 26: repeat Row 7

Change color to Dublin

Row 27: repeat Row 8

Row 28: repeat Row 9

Row 29: repeat Row 5. Then fasten off.

Now, you have 2 choices. You can weave in ALL the ends. Or you do a row of single crochets with the color Dublin after the hanging ends to hide them and only weave in some of them to not make the single crochet rows to thick. I chose the second choice.

Now you are done.
