The classic granny square pillow gets an upgrade with this two color stitch variation. Pops of white contrast nicely against the rich red background of this holiday design.

Welcome back to the Advent Calendar Mystery Crochet Along. Today is day 20 of this is the fun and festive event. As I’m sure you know by now, I have been releasing one stitch tutorial on all odd days and one free pattern on all even days since December 1st. There are only a few fun holiday surprises left before Christmas eve!

You’re going to love today’s free crochet pattern. It is a granny square pillow that uses the boxed block stitch (which we learned about during yesterday’s free stitch tutorial). The pretty red and white design of this Christmas cushion is positively perfect for your holiday home decor.

Granny Square Pillow - standard pin

Since this design is crocheted from the center out, it’s easy to customize the size of your crochet throw pillow to fit the pillow insert of your choosing – even larger pillow forms. All you have to do is crochet a square that’s twice the size of your pillow insert.

You might notice that the recommended hook size is a little smaller than average for a worsted weight yarn. The small hook size combined with the boxed block stitch makes a really solid granny square that won’t let your pillow insert peek through.

So let’s get started!
