How to Crochet a Plaid Heart Pillow – Free Pattern

The Plaid Pillow with Heart is a free crochet pattern and made using single crochet stitches and the plaid crochet pattern technique.
My favorite time of the year is the Winter season, especially the Holiday season. Now, I know we are months away from that time of the year, but it does help to start making gifts earlier in the year. I should better say: crocheting gift throughout the year is best so you don’t get stressed out when its gift-giving season.
But there seems to be only one pattern during the Holiday seasons that makes everyone want to cozy up and enjoy family time in front of the fireplace while reading a book or watching a movie. And that pattern is the plaid pattern, with the buffalo plaid being the most popular and well-known one.
As I love making hearts and my favorite color being red (yes purple, too) I thought this plaid pillow with a giant heart would show off this combination well.
The border around it just makes the whole pillow come together. It allows the plaid to stand out and the heart to make a bold statement, don’t you think?
This Plaid Heart Pillow is simply made with single crochet stitches and 4 different worsted weighted yarn colors. If you have never crocheted with color changes before, I would suggest you sign up for the FREE 3-Part Workshop on how to Change Colors in Crochet. I teach you lots of my tips and tricks to hide yarn, have less yarn to weave in, and make it simply easy and enjoyable.
So, let me now give you the supplies you need in order to crochet this Plaid Heart Pillow pattern.
This pattern is also available as an ad-free, printer-friendly pdf pattern that can be purchased at the links below for only a small fee.

Written Pattern for the Plaid Pillow with Heart:
You will be making a front and back of the pillow, then crochet them together. After adding the pillow insert you will finish up with a border at the end.
You will be crocheting the entire panels in single crochet stitches. Per row you have 2 red yarn colors at the time. Always carry the both colors with you. Drop the 3rd red color not used during those rows. Pick up the white only when you crochet white, carry the reds during that process (you can also not carry the red yarns during this process and it will be even cleaner – I carried as I wanted it to shimmer through).
Establish a right and wrong side. I like calling the right side the pretty side and the wrong side the ugly side. Always carry the yarn on the ugly side, not on top of the stitches, but behind it.

Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Once you finished the two pillow panels, crochet a surface outline around the hearts. This video shows how to do a surface crochet stitch if you never done that before. The surface crochet stitch makes the hearts prettier and stand out more.
Crocheting the Pillow panels together & adding the Border
Using the medium red yarn, crochet the pillow panels together using single crochet stitches. 1 sc per stitch or per row, adding 3 sc stitches in each corner. Make sure to create a multiple of 4 stitches for that row as you will need that multiple count for the border.
Using the white yarn, crochet this pattern repeat all around for 1 round: *1 sc, sk 1 st, 3 dc in the same st, sk 1 st, repeat from * (one stitch per corner for this round)
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
You have now completed your plaid pillow with a special heart in the middle.
