Easy. You simply will follow each part once released – you have 1 day to complete each section of the pattern. The schedule is broken down below.

I’ll be crocheting each book bag piece on camera according to the schedule below. Pattern includes many customizations, especially which colors to pick, or how many pockets to crochet.

  • white (2 skeins)

• 4mm hook (regular hook)
• 4mm Tunisian Crochet Hook
• scissors
• tapestry needle
• 2 plastic canvas sheets
• some cotton fabric (20×11 inches)
• hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
• optional: rotary cutter and mat
• 2 buttons for a removable pocket

Can I use a different yarn?

Yes, you can switch to a different yarn brand, even a different fiber if you prefer.

I recommend any worsted yarn for this project. Pick from your yarn stash if you can. The plastic canvas, cotton fiber, and hot glue are optional, but highly recommended!

But it’s an ideal project as a yarn stash buster. Use leftover yarn if you have any. I would recommend sticking with either of my above recommendations.

What colors should I pick?

I recommend any of the mentioned solid colors.

Either stick with the colors I picked or pick your favorite colors for your favorite book cover.

Can I use a different hook size?

Yes, you can pick a different size. Just remember the pattern will be a bit smaller or larger unless you focus on the gauge provided.

Book Cover

Use blue yarn

Ch 83, start from the 2nd ch from the hook

R1-9: 1 sc per st, turn

R10A: 1 sc in 6 st, turn

R11A-15A: 1 sc per st, turn, then cut yarn

R10B: Now start with new yarn next to the last st of the first section made in R10A, sk 1 st, then 1 sc per st until you have 7 sts left, turn

R11B-15B: 1 sc per st, turn, then cut yarn

R10C: Now start with new yarn next to the last st of the first section made in R10B, sk 1 st, then 1 sc per st (last 6 sts)

R11C-15C: 1 sc per st, turn, then cut yarn

R16: 1 sc in 6 sts, ch 1, 1 sc in 68 sts, ch 1, 1 sc in 6 sts, turn

R17-32: 1 sc in per st, turn

R33-38: Repeat all 3 sections (A, B, C) from R10-15

2 Binding Lines

R1: use the first 3 chs to connect to the first ltr, then 1 ltr per ch, fasten off

Block those 2 pieces.

Book Pages/Binding

Use white yarn and a Tunisian Crochet Hook

Ch 15

R1: 1 tss per st

Repeat R1 until you have 25 inches, then block the piece to remove the curling.

Written Pattern

Back Pocket

Use blue yarn

Ch 13, start from the 2nd ch from the hook

R1-13: 1 sc per st, turn

Bag Straps

Use blue yarn

Ch 6, start from the 2nd ch from the hook

R1: 1 sc per st

R2: 1 tsc per st

Repeat R2 for about 56 inches

Optionally, you can make this strap longer or shorter. If you know that you will be adding heavy content inside the bag, I recommend 4-8 inches less as the strap will stretch a bit.

Book Closure Strap Holder

Use the honey color

Ch 4, start from the 2nd ch from the hook

R1-12: 1 sc per st, turn, fasten off

Book Closure Strap

Use the honey color

Ch 8, start from the 2nd ch from the hook

R1-34: 1 sc per st, turn

R35: 1 sc dec, 1 sc per st, turn

Repeat R35 until you have 2 sts left, then decrease over both those sts, fasten off

Removable Pocket

Use white yarn

Ch 26 + 2 (turning chain)

R1: use the first 2 chs to connect to the first ldc, then 1 ldc per ch, turn

R2-21: ch 2, 1 ldc per st, turn

Now fold it about ⅔ of the way upward, then sew the sides together, then weave a line through the center, and then add loops to the top left and right corners, including a button on each side.

Inside Pocket as a Divider

Use white yarn

Ch 34 + 2 (turning chain)

R1: use the first 2 chs to connect to the first ldc, then 1 ldc per ch, turn

R2-28: ch 2, 1 ldc per st, turn

Fold it in half and sew the sides together.

Written Pattern

Assembly

Prep the lining with plastic canvas

Cut 2 pieces (9.5 x 7.5 inches) from the plastic canvas sheets. Then cut 1 piece that is 3.5 x 9.5 inches.

Now, make sure your fabric piece is 20 x 11 inches.

Lay the plastic canvas over the fabric, cut the corners like the image below.

Glue the plastic canvas with hot glue to the fabric (just some areas randomly, not too much). Then add hot glue to the overhanging fabric pieces and fold them over to glue them to the plastic canvas, like the image below.

I also glued the cut fabric corners on the top of the corners for extra stability.

Assembly of the book bag

Sew on the long Tunisian Crochet piece (supposed to be paper) to the blue book cover, like the images below, for 8 inches.

Make sure there is a small edge on the left and bottom, such that is looks more like a book where the pages are a bit inward from the cover.

Now fold over the other blue cover side and sew the Tunisian Crochet piece to the other side of the cover (such that the pages are attached to the cover). Then do the same on the other side.

You’ll now add the lining (plastic canvas with fabric) to the inside of the bag, such that you can see where to add the holes into the fabric/plastic canvas.

Cut the plastic canvas out, cut a line into the fabric, and then fold it over and glue it to the plastic canvas. I personally hot-glued some fabric pieces over the edges for more stability, like shown below (remember this part will be hidden later, so it doesn’t need to be pretty).

Then add the plastic canvas/fabric piece back to the inside of the crochet book bag. BUT hot glue the center piece of fabric/plastic canvas piece to the bottom of the white crochet piece. Then, hot glue the sides of the plastic canvas/fabric piece to the inside of the book bag.

Sew the 2 small rectangular pieces to the outside bottom of the book bag (binding), like the picture below.

Sew the divider pocket to the inside of the bag. This may be a bit hard to reach, but it’s doable. Be patient.

Next, sew on the book closure strap and holder to the bag (holder to the front, strap to the back).

Finally, weave the bag strap through the holes and seam the ends together. Make sure the straps are not twisted before you sew them together.

The straps can be worn as a shoulder purse (straps are equal length) or as an over-the-shoulder bag; pull the front strap long such that the back one is flat towards the back side of the bag.
