Did you know there are many variations of the traditional granny square? Today I want to showcase the Daisy Granny Square. This less traditional iteration uses linked double crochet stitches to minimize gaps and add a cohesive look to the overall finished product. Plus, the white petals pop on the green background for a stunning color combination.
Using this free crochet pattern, you will make a bunch of daisy granny squares to join to resemble a field of daisies. This pattern is for those who are familiar with certain special stitches, including linked double crochet. If you are unfamiliar with this technique (or any others used), I have included links to stitch tutorials and a comprehensive video to guide you.
These fun daisy granny squares are quick and easy to make. All you need is green, yellow, and white yarn to create this charming granny square blanket. So grab your crochet hook, and worsted weight yarn, and make this square afghan your next crochet project!

My Granny Square Background
Here’s a small little secret. While I was knitting several years ago (Grandma taught me), I decided to finally learn how to crochet. I think that if you know how to knit, crocheting is easier to learn.
But my point is, I actually learned how to crochet using a traditional granny square! If my memory is correct, it was this basic granny square pattern that I used. Sweet memories 🙂

Crochet Daisy Granny Square Blanket Pattern – Written Instructions
If you want to change the yarn weight for this pattern, you may want to check out the blog post Trying Different Crochet Hook Sizes and Yarn which compares DK, Worsted, and Bulky with a 3, 4, and 5mm crochet hook.
A round starting with an ldc starts like this: ch 2, insert hook into the 2nd ch from the hook, yo and pull through (that’s your yo for the dc), insert hook into the first st, pull up a loop, 3 loops on your hook, finish like a dc st.
A round starting with a ltr starts like this: ch 3, insert hook into the 2nd ch from the hook, yo and pull through, insert hook into the 3rd ch from the hook, yo and pull through (those are the 2 yarn overs for the tr), insert hook into the first st, pull up a loop, 4 loops on your hook, finish like a tr st.
In Canary:
R1: Magic Ring and add 6 sc, close ring, sl st
R2: 2 sc per st, sl st
In White
R3: (1 unfinished ATC (stacked single crochet – height of a tr), 2 unfinished tr, you now have 4 loops on your hook, yo and pull through all 4 loops, ch 1, *in the next st: 3 unfinished tr, yo and pull through all 4 loops (1 tr cluster), ch 1, repeat from * in every stitch all around, sl st (you will have 12 clusters all separated by ch 1’s in between each cluster)
In Green
R4: Crochet only into the ch-1 spaces, ch 3 (to connect first ltr to), 2 tr into first ch-1 space (I usually do the one before the sl st from the previous round), *3 ldc each into the next 2 ch-1 spaces, in the following ch-1 space crochet the following (2 ltr, ch 1, 1 tr, 1 ltr (connect the ltr to tr)), repeat from * 2 more times, then 3 ldc each into the next 2 ch-1 spaces, into the last ch-1 space (the one you started with) finish the corner with 1 tr, 1 ltr and ch 1, sl st to the first st
R5: start in the corner before the sl st, ch 2, 2 ldc in the corner (half a corner finished, you’ll finish it at the end), now *1 ldc per st until the corner, in the corner crochet the following (2 ldc, ch 1, 1 dc, 1 ldc), repeat from * until the end, now finish the corner, 2 ldc, ch 1, sl st to the first st
Blanket Assembly with Join As You Go (JAYGO) Method
Only crochet the FIRST SQUARE until round 5 completely. Starting from the 2nd square, use the JAYGO Method to connect the 2nd to the 1st square using slip stitches (regular or hidden). The video tutorial shows this step by step.
Use the JAYGO Method for ALL the rest of the squares. You should have 8×8 squares for this baby blanket. Half of them are made with the grass color and the other half with the peapod color – all organized as a checkerboard/chessboard pattern complete the whole blanket.
The detailed tutorial for Joining Daisy Granny Squares As You Go is now available (written and video tutorial).
Crochet Blanket Border
Use white yarn and crochet 1 sc per st and 2-3 sc for the 4 corner all around. Make sure to have a multiple of 6 stitches after this foundation round. I had 126 sts.
For the next round (continue with white), crochet the shell stitch border all around like this: *1 sc, sk 2 sts, 5 dc, sk 2 sts, repeat from *
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Optionally: You can make this blanket as big as you like using heavier yarn OR adding more daisy granny squares to this blanket. Mine is 36×36 inches for a baby blanket.
