This is a free tutorial to learn how to crochet and join granny squares as you go together for the Linked Crochet Daisy Granny Square Blanket. The tutorial has both complete step-by-step instructions with photos and a video tutorial.
If you ever tried crocheting granny squares, you likely also had a thought about turning many of them into a blanket, bag, pillow, or anything else. Well, for granny squares, or actually any geometric shapes with flat edges, you have really just 2 choices to connect them.
Joining Granny Squares
- The Mattress Stitch, or any other sewing stitch – Sewing
- Join As You Go – Crocheting (Tutorial is below)
Although the Mattress Stitch is a smooth and great method to connect granny squares, it can also take time. Plus many crocheters do not like to sew crochet pieces together.
In that case, crocheting is an amazing technique to join squares as you go together. But there are a few different ways to do this technique. Usually, it involves using the last round of the granny square you are crocheting to connect to a neighboring square. The connection is typically, but not always, done with slip stitches.
In this tutorial, I’ll teach you how to join the Daisy Squares together as you go using crochet regular slip stitches and invisible slip stitches so you can see the difference between the 2 stitches. In the end, you’ll be able to crochet and finish the Daisy Granny Square Blanket using the Join As You Go Method (JAYGO) of your dreams.
Linked Crochet Join As You Go
Although we will use regular or hidden slip stitches for the Join As You Go Method for the Daisy Granny Square Blanket, it is important to know that the actual pattern is made with Linked Crochet Stitches. The last round uses only linked double crochet stitches which are used in connection with the slip stitches to connect the squares together.

How to Join Daisy Granny Squares As You Go – Photo Tutorial
Before I get into the details on how to crochet while joining granny squares as you go for the Daisy Granny Square Blanket, it will be in your best interest to first check out the pattern and make at least 1 square first. That way you can practice and have a square ready. Get the Daisy Granny Square Blanket Pattern here.
Once you have 1 Daisy square, you’ll need a 2nd square ALMOST finished. Stop 3/4 of the way around for the last round which is round 5. Then start with the tutorial below.
I will focus first on the regular slip stitch join as you go method and then show you the invisible slip stitch version after as a comparison so you can decide on your own how you will finish this blanket.
Setup
First, finish one Daisy Granny Square Blanket Square completely.
2nd Daisy Square is almost finished
Now finish the 2nd square 3/4 of the way around for round 5. At this stage you will start with the join as you go method (JAYGO).
Joining Daisy Granny Squares As You Go
Start in half a corner (2nd to last corner to finish). You will now crochet 1 stitch at a time (to finish the square). But every time you crochet 1 stitch, you will crochet a slip stitch over to the first square to the matching/parallel stitch. Then again, you will crochet 1 stitch on the 2nd square, before slip stitching back over to the next stitch on the first square. Continue that process until you finish in the last (also the first) corner.
Regular vs Invisible Slip Stitch when Joining Squares As You Go
Let me now show you how the regular vs invisible slip stitch compare. The invisible slip stitch is made by removing the hook from your loop, inserting the hook into the stitch on the first square’s matching stitch, and then pulling the loop through. Now you’ll continue as normal before crocheting a stitch on the 2nd square.
The invisible slip stitch is less bold, has less texture, is more flat, and has a smoother transition from one square to another.
The regular slip stitch is bolder, has more texture and more height. That is the version I picked for my Daisy Blanket, because it goes faster as I didn’t have to remove the hook from the loop and I love the texture.
See the picture below, to see the difference next to each other. The first part of the join as you go connection was done with the regular slip stitch, the second part was done with the invisible slip stitch.
Close up – Regular vs Invisible Slip Stitch
Here you can see the difference between the regular and invisible slip stitch a bit more clearly as they are highlighted with ovals next to each other.
I show the difference a bit more clearly in the video tutorial above.
